Question: My wife and I have decided to start trying for a baby so I have a question about my hair loss treatments. I understand I need to stop using propecia a week before but what about minoxidil? Do I need to stop using that too and how long do I wait for it to leave my system? Many thanks.

Minoxidil Hair Loss Treatment for Men and WomenAnswer: Hi, Nigel. You are absolutely right about this regardless of which brand of finasteride 1mg you use. We advise men to stop taking this seven days before they start trying for a baby as a precautionary measure. However, you can continue using topical applications of minoxidil during this time.

This is because there is no evidence that minoxidil residue from topical forms of this male hair loss treatment can be passed to a woman through bodily fluids in the same manner as may happen with finasteride.

For the purposes of this response we are assuming you are using a minoxidil foam, lotion or cream but do be aware that it can be a different story if taken in oral form. If this is the case, you need to consult your treatment provider for their advice as this is not something we offer.

If you are an existing Belgravia client, please do contact your personal Treatment Advisor so they can adjust your course accordingly. Best of luck to you and your wife!
