Question: I am looking into getting a hair transplant abroad as it’s much cheaper than getting it done in Scotland where I live. I understand I’ll need to use hair loss treatments after I’ve had the op to keep the results looking good but do I have to use foreign treatments or can I use yours? I’m not sure about what happens afterwards basically so could do with some advice. Cheers.
Answer: Hi Jamie. No problem at all, we can definitely advise you as to after care regarding using hair loss treatments following a hair transplant.
Firstly, before you commit to a transplant abroad, we would advise you to exercise extreme caution as there are a number of risks involved. It is also not always as cheap as it may first appear given some of the hidden costs involved, particularly in the event that anything goes wrong. Do take your time to research this fully and talk to as many potential surgeons as possible – both locally and abroad – to see how comfortable you feel with them.
Secondly, it is not just after a restoration procedure that patients are advised to use pharmaceutical treatments; top surgeons actually recommend following a targeted male hair loss course for a minimum of six months prior to the operation. Typically this would feature finasteride 1mg – a daily oral tablet – and topical applications of high strength minoxidil. Although some men opt to use one or the other, we tend to see better results in those who follow a combination programme featuring both.
This stabilises the shedding and can often produce significant regrowth results within this timeframe too, allowing the patient to potentially reconsider his decision as to whether surgery is actually necessary at this time. If he still decides to proceed, because the hair loss has been stalled and the hair should be in a healthier condition, it makes it easier for the surgeon to work with which may help to provide better results. By stimulating the optimum level of regrowth, it also reduces the number of grafts required during the procedure.
Once you have had the procedure your surgeon will advise you as to immediate aftercare and when you are able to start a maintenance plan.
