Chinese Herbs for Hair Loss

When it comes to hair loss and thinning hair, many people turn to alternative medicine to see if it can prevent hair loss and boost regrowth. Chinese medicine has been around for thousands of years and includes herbs and tonics which claim to reverse and slow down the ageing process this includes slowing down hair loss.
Today, Chinese herbs are still widely considered an 'alternative' type of medicine. We take a look at some of the most popular herbs and remedies to see whether they can actually help in the prevention of hair loss.

Fo-Ti

Also known as He Shou Wu, this Chinese herb - also known as Chinese Knotweed - has been used for hundreds of years to reverse the body's ageing process. It is said to strengthen hair and restore colour to grey hair. Renowned as a 'longevity herb' it also has a number of other health benefits, including reducing cholesterol, boosting the immune system, aiding sleep and increasing antioxidants in the body. Fo Ti, the commercial version of the herb, can cause some unpleasant side effects which may outweigh any positive benefits. The Chinese FDA has warned about its potential harmful effects on the liver and recently a fatality was reported as a result of taking this herb.

Wu Wei Zin

This is one of the most popular and commonly prescribed Chinese herbal tonics, and it's promoted as a cure for baldness. The tonic is said to enhance the quality of skin on the scalp, providing a healthier environment for hair to grow. Whilst there is no medical evidence available to support this claim, it's certainly true that good scalp health is necessary in order for hair to grow thick and strong.

Nu Shen Zi

This herb is another longevity herb which is said to reverse the ageing process and extend life. It works by improving scalp circulation and is a blood tonic which allegedly prevents hair loss and aids healthy regrowth.

Do these remedies actually prevent hair loss?

It's best to take claims of 'miracle' hair loss cures from Chinese herbs with a pinch of salt; whether these ancient herbal remedies have any effect or not is unclear. For anyone seriously concerned about hair loss, it is always best to consult a hair loss specialist for expert advice and a personalised hair loss treatment programme that will often include the use of scientifically proven medications.
