Nancy
Question: My hair has always been my pride and joy. I figured since it is pretty damn healthy, it could deal with some bleach damage. And I figured the master stylist who did all the color-corrections would know how much would be too much. I was wrong, and now I want to burst into tears every time I look at my hair or touch it. I just don’t know what to do. my hair has also NEVER been shorter than this and it breaks and falls out. What should i do to regrow hair?
Answer: Hi, Nancy. The key factor here is whether the over-bleaching caused the hair to snap along the shaft - which is known as hair breakage - or whether it has caused you to experience hair loss - where the issue affects the follicles so falls from the root.
Hair breakage is common in bleached hair and causes the hair to snap, leaving behind split hairs which look frizzy and thin. If this is the issue then all you would need to do is keep the hair healthy and keep trimming the ends until the new healthier hair grows back. To speed this recovery along you could visit the hairdresser and have them cut your hair in such a way as to remove at least some, or hopefully all, of the damaged strands - opting for a layered cut can mean you get to keep the length too.
We would also recommend taking food supplements such as Belgravia's Hair Vitalics in order to nourish and strengthen your hair from the inside, out. After harsh bleaching or any other form of chemical treatment it is important to put as many nutrients back into the hair as possible via conditioning and through your food, to aid with healthy hair growth.
If you are experiencing thinning hair which you feel is more than just the result of breakage, it is better to have a consultation so that a hair loss specialist can assess you. Possible conditions could include Telogen Effluvium - which causes temporary hair thinning diffusely across the whole scalp - or it may have accelerated or triggered Female Pattern Hair Loss, should you be genetically predisposed to this hereditary condition. This causes thinning around the top of the scalp only but is a permanent condition.
Both of these conditions can be dealt with effectively and a specialist will be able to tailor a bespoke hair loss treatment course to your specific needs. First, they will need to assess you in order to ascertain the precise reason for your shedding. Ideally, we would need a full consultation in order to confirm your hair loss condition - or conditions, as it is possible to have more than one simultaneously in addition to hair breakage. If you are unable to visit one of our Central London hair loss clinics, you can complete an online consultation instead but in this instance we would ask that you please do submit photos with this - they can be uploaded to the website and you will be prompted to do so whilst completing the form.
