Hair loss has been a culturally significant subject for many centuries. Societies from around the world and at many different times have had very clear ideas about what baldness signified, and how to cure it – and the people recorded in the Bible are no different in this regard.
Biblical accounts of hair loss
There are several references to hair loss in the Bible, and the concept is used to convey a great many ideas and themes. One of the more notorious stories is in Kings 2:23, where the prophet Elisha is taunted by some young men because of his bald head. Elisha puts a curse on the youths, causing two bears to appear, and maul them.
The second mention of hair loss lies in Leviticus 13:40-41, which proclaims that “a man has lost his hair and he is bald, he is clean. If he has lost his hair from the front of scalp and has a bald forehead, he is clean.” The moral of Leviticus’ statement seems to be that baldness is not a laughing matter; that it is unfair to treat those who lose their hair badly. Indeed, this is in marked contrast to Ancient Egypt, where baldness was seen as a sign of being cursed by the gods, and suffering from hair loss was seen as punishment for immorality!
No miracle cure
This attitude of the patriarchs was clearly enlightened, especially seeing as at the time there was no reliable or effective cure for hair loss. It is only in the past 20 years that our understanding of the physiology of the scalp has reached an extent to which we can offer some form of remedy.
