Baldness: Good for Your Love Life?

Many men fear losing their hair, yet roughly half of all men will experience genetic baldness by the age of 50. But it’s not all bad news; being susceptible to male hair loss could be good for your love life!

One of the contributing factors to genetic hair loss is a sensitivity to testosterone – and this is also linked to libido. Men with lower levels of testosterone often report problems with loss of libido, whereas the reverse is true for those with higher levels. Pheromones, the natural chemicals of desire produced by all humans, are directly influenced by testosterone levels too. This could help explain the sex appeal of balding movie stars such as Jason Statham and Bruce Willis.

Baldness or another kind of hair loss?

It’s generally easy to tell if your hair loss is down to male pattern baldness, which is caused by Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a by-product of testosterone. DHT attaches itself to the hair follicles and causes them to shrink. This eventually causes the hair to thin and start shedding.

Male pattern baldness only affects only hair on the top of the head. If you’re noticing patchy hair loss across your scalp, or any loss of hair elsewhere on your body this could be caused by other factors such as stress, diet, medication side-effects, or even the autoimmune disorder Alopecia Areata.

Treating male pattern baldness

It’s all well and good to say that being genetically predisposed to baldness could boost your love life; whilst it’s true that some bald movie stars and celebrities have sex appeal, going bald may not be for everyone. If you want to regrow hair lost as a result of hereditary hair loss, there are proven hair loss medications available and a personalised course featuring these can be tailored specifically to your needs by a hair loss specialist.

The best thing to do if you are worried about losing your hair is to keep an eye out for signs of thinning hair or excessive hair in the plug hole, on your hands when brushing/styling hair or on your pillow. Often, other people will notice your hair loss before you do. Should this happen one day, and it’s not what you want, it’s best to seek assistance sooner rather than later. The earlier the intervention, the greater the likelihood of re-growing your hair.
