Reality TV star, Khloe Kardashian has admitted she colours her scalp using an eye shadow in the same shade as her hair.

Khloe Kardashian Admits to Colouring Her Scalp with Eye ShadowShe opened up about her unusual hair secret after fellow guests at a celebrity bash noticed how perfectly drawn on her hairline was and began to suspect all was not as it seemed.

Kardashian said she primarily uses this beauty trick to disguise her scalp so people can’t tell how pale she really is under her much-loved fake tan. This professional make-up technique has long been used by actors to disguise thinning hair as it has the added benefit of making hair appear thicker from a distance. Unfortunately for the youngest Kardashian sister, she didn’t get away with trying it out in public this time!

There are many great things we love that we have inherited from our fathers but sometimes their hairline isn’t one of them. This Father’s Day we continue our series of Top 10 Questions About Male Pattern Baldness and answer your most asked questions about genetic hair loss: “Is hair loss hereditary?” and “Will I go bald like my Dad?

Is Hair Loss Genetic? Martin Sheen and His Sons, Then and Now

THEN AND NOW: How this famous acting family’s hairlines have changed over the years. Top Left-Right: Son, Emilio Estevez in The Breakfast Club; Father, Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now; Youngest son, Charlie Sheen, in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off . Bottom Left-Right: Emilio Estevez, brother Ramon Estevez, Martin Sheen, and Charlie Sheen, as they look now.

Father & Sons

You can see that the male side of the Sheen family all appear to have fairly full, thick hair with various degrees of receding hairlines due to Male Pattern Baldness. Youngest son Charlie Sheen, now best known for his headline-grabbing partying and hard living, was rumoured to have had a hair transplant, however, here you can clearly see his hair is noticeably thinner with slight receding at the temples. But is father, Martin Sheen, responsible for his sons’ hair loss conditions?

Male Pattern Baldness is Based on Genetic Factors

It was previously thought that baldness was a hereditary condition inherited from the maternal grandfather, however, it is more likely that both parents contribute to the likelihood of their offspring developing the condition, Androgenetic Alopecia. As such, is extremely difficult to say for sure whose genes will most affect your hair loss condition, however it is often the case that, if your father suffers from Male Pattern Baldness, your hairline may recede in a similar way. When you start to notice any hair thinning or if your hairline is starting to recede, the best thing to do is to seek expert advice at an early stage.

NEXT UP: How do I know if my Male Pattern Baldness hair loss is temporary or permanent?

In the second part of our Top 10 Questions About Male Pattern Baldness series, we let you know the signs and what to look for so you can tell if your thinning is due to genetic hair loss.

An Example of Male Pattern Baldness, Successfully Treated by The Belgravia Centre

One way to identify this type of hair loss is to check the position(s) where thinning occurs. Male Pattern Hair Loss is always confined to the area at the top of the head, around the hairline and crown. This is why men who become bald are often only left with hair at the sides and back of their heads, in a horseshoe shape.

The various ways in which Male Pattern Baldness presents and the different stages of Male Hair Loss can be seen in the Norton Scale diagram. However, you may find it more helpful to view our extensive gallery of Hair Loss Success Stories which displays images charting various patients’ treatment results, including ‘Before’ pictures.

There are cases of hair loss where shedding is experienced diffusely all over the scalp (including the sides and back). This is not genetic and is probably another form of hair loss, such as Diffuse Thinning (or ‘Telogen Effluvium‘). This is more common in women whilst genetic hair loss (Male and Female Pattern Baldness) is common in both men and women. Both types of hair loss are reversible using specialist medical treatment.

It is always best to have your hair loss properly assessed by an expert who can advise on the causes and treatment options that suit your individual needs either in person, or by completing our Online Diagnostic Form if you cannot attend one of our clinics.

The Belgravia Centre offers free consultations with our highly trained hair loss specialists who will assess your condition and talk you through their recommended treatment option. These include our exclusive formulation treatments prepared in our Central London hair loss pharmacies. Call 020 7730 6666 now or message us to book your appointment.

NEXT UP: Is Hair Loss Hereditary?

In the first of our series, answering the Top 10 Questions About Male Pattern Baldness, we answer What is Male Pattern Baldness?

Successful Treatment for Hair Loss Caused by Male Pattern Baldness at The Belgravia Centre

Male Pattern Baldness aka Androgenic Alopecia

Over 60% of our patients receive treatment for Male Pattern Baldness in order to combat a thinning crown and their receding hairlines – both typical signs of genetic hair loss. Androgenic Alopecia, more commonly known as Male Pattern Baldness or genetic hair loss, is the most common cause of hair loss in men. It is also the most treated hair condition at The Belgravia Centre.

This type of hair loss is caused by the effect of male hormones (‘androgens’), on genetically predisposed hair follicles (the hereditary follicles passed down through your family). A reaction takes place inside these hair follicles, where the male hormone ‘testosterone’ is converted into the androgen ‘Dihydrotestosterone’ (‘DHT’) by an enzyme called ‘5-alpha reductase’. The DHT created during this process prevents new hair cells from growing, causing hair loss and often baldness.

Johnny Depp going bald for new film role

As Johnny Depp celebrated his 51st birthday we were surprised to see him go from having his trademark full head of the thick, black hair to displaying an extreme case of Male Pattern Baldness overnight. But this wasn’t a case of remarkably rapid hair loss – not to mention premature ageing. The movie star’s makeover involving thinning hair that’s also bald on top and receding around the temples, is just for his latest film role as the real life gangster Whitey Bulger in crime movie Black Mass currently filming in Boston. That’s some great make-up Johnny!

If your hair is more Whitey Bulger than Johnny Depp, take a look at our range of professional treatments for male hair loss.

Belgravia Centre New Street

We’d like to thank everybody that has helped our new clinic in the City of London get it’s feet off the ground! Our second centre was opened last January and has enjoyed a successful year. We put a lot of time and effort into the opening of the new centre, ensuring its facilities and decor were of the very highest standards and thankfully most people that have visited us have been extremely satisfied! Here are just a few of the comments we have received since opening at the beginning of the year.

“I believe the clinic has not been open for very long and I was very impressed by the cleanliness and quality.   There was a calm atmosphere and the facilities were all of a high standard.”

“I was very glad and satisfied with all the members of staff that I met on the day. They were extremely helpful. I would particularly like to emphasize how great Julia was, she was extremely nice and I found all the support and advice she offered me to be useful.”

“very pleasant place to be. reflected in the professional attitude of the staff there”

“Mariana was extremely helpful and friendly. In addition she made me feel very comfortable and explained clearly the type of hair loss I was experiencing and answered the many questions I had. She also recommended medication for me and explained in layman’s what the medication did and what type of results I could expect. After speaking with Mariana I felt and still feel extremely optimistic about regaining my hair line.”

“the clinic was clean and minimal it was very nicely done”

“the clinic itself looked very modern and clean, was pleasantly surprised”

“Once I arrived at the clinic I was very nervous from the feed back I would be given about my hair as I have been trying to get real answers for a very long time, I liked the atmosphere of the centre it wasn’t claustrophobic at all, the seats were very comfortable… members of staff at the reception area were very friendly, Mariana then took me upstairs for me to have my consultation she greeted me with “Hello how are you” which I find caring and a good impression to make on patients and visitors, when I was told that my problem was male pattern baldness I was upset but when I was told it can be treated as long as I act now it made me find hope again, she explained to me very well what I have to do and taught me a lot about hair I didn’t even learn in school, I then went downstairs to Cherie who was again very helpful she explained to me about the prices and I personally found them very manageable unlike some cheap selling products that don’t even work.”

“I’ve visited Belgravia centre near Liverpool Street. The atmosphere of the clinic is nice and cosy. All the staff members I’ve met were extremely friendly and helpful! The reception ladies were very welcoming. As well as my hair loss specialist Mariana Almeida and treatment advisor Cherie Riding. Both of them seemed professional and knowledgeable , supportive and managed to answer all of my questions. Meanwhile the lady that carried my treatment procedure (which I enjoyed a lot) out made the time fly! Teasing someone via social media is nothing particularly unusual, even if the persons involved are top class sportsmen. But when Andy Murray tweeted Rafael Nadal taunting him about his hair loss, things were a little different.

“Who loses their hair first out of me and rafa?” mused Murray publicly via Twitter on Friday night. Murray was apparently picking up on media observations that Rafael Nadal’s hair appears to be thinning, resulting in patchy bald spots appearing on his head.

Rafael Nadal January 2016 Thinning Hair

Irony alert

In July last year, The Belgravia Centre Blog covered Andy Murray’s hair, and suspicions that a receding hairline may be affecting his form. Since that time, Murray’s hair appears to have begun re-growing suggesting that his hair had grown thicker, and that much of the loss spotted in 2012 had been replaced by the beginning of this year.

It is possible then that Murray could be taunting Nadal for not following suit and seeking hair loss treatment to resolve his own thinning hairline. If Murray is receiving treatment for hair loss, it is more than likely he will be the winner of his tweeted question.

Maintaining the Spanish Sexy

Voted as one of the world’s sexiest sportsmen on several occasions, 27-year old Rafael Nadal’s hair is an important part of his image. However over recent years his once lustrous black locks have thinned dramatically, leaving his scalp clearly visible underneath.

At Nadal’s age, over a quarter of men will have experienced significant hair loss. This may take the form of a receding hairline, balding at the crown or even a combination of both. Although several factors play their part in hair loss, male pattern baldness remains the most common cause of thinning hair across the world.

Some good news

As Murray himself may perhaps demonstrate, hair loss treatments are extremely effective, particularly for men in their twenties and thirties experiencing the first stages of receding hair. With expert help, Nadal still stands a very good chance of regrowing any hair that he has already lost, giving him a chance of beating Murray in the hair stakes and on the court.

News is spreading about a new women’s product created by L’Oreal called ‘Kérastase Densifique’. It claims to be the first product to ‘reawaken’ dormant hair cells.

Scientists say they have developed a molecule called stemoxydine, which attempts to increase oxygen levels in the scalp and target a condition called ‘hypoxia’, which is found in many men and women suffering from hair loss.

A three month treatment course of Kérastase Densifique is to cost £300 and the producers say it is clinically proven to be effective for both men and women. According to L’Oreal, in a 3 month study 101 people found they had a 4% increase in the number of hairs they had. It does not seem the product has been licensed by the MHRA or FDA, so we will be keeping a close eye on developments related to this product and updating this page.

There are currently only 2 effective, clinically proven and medically licensed medications for hair loss available. Find out about them on our hair loss treatments page and view results achieved for hundreds of men and women that have used Belgravia’s specially tailored treatment programmes for hair loss.
