Question: I’m a 19 year old black male. I have a receding hairline which has been worrying me as I have such thick hair. I love my hair and I don’t want to lose it.

As a black man, my hair is a different texture from Caucasians for example. Would the hair treatment effective provided here work on my hair? Also, it is the treatment very expensive to have?

Diagram Showing Hair Fibre Characteristics by RaceAnswer: Hi Kel, Yes - Male Hair Loss treatments are suitable for use on all hair types, and have been seen to produce significant regrowth results in Belgravia's black clients, as well as other ethnicities.

Afro hair differs to Asian and Caucasian hair as the hair follicle is differently shaped. As you can see from the diagram pictured, Afro hair follicles are more a more elliptical shape which leads to curly to 'coiled', spiraling hair. Asian hair follicles tend to be round, hence the propensity towards completely straight or very slightly wavy hair. Caucasian hair follicles fall between these two shapes and, as they are slightly oval, they tend to produce straight to curly hair.

Treatment for a receding hairline often involves topical applications of minoxidil to promote regrowth in this stubborn area. Typically this area of the scalp takes the longest to show signs of regrowth, however, with the right treatment used consistently, it can respond well.

You can find many examples of Belgravia's male pattern hair loss clients with afro hair in our extensive Success Stories gallery which includes photos from before and after starting their treatment. You can even filter to view just those results which feature receding hairline regrowth.

Afro hair tends to be quite dry so a Treatment Advisor would take this into account when tailoring your treatment course. They can also recommend hair care products, such as shampoos and conditioners, and clinical therapy sessions to help improve the hair and scalp's condition, where needed.

Belgravia treatment courses generally start from £600 per year and go up to around £2,000 per year. The price depends upon the treatment options you choose and these choices are explained to you once a hair loss specialist has assessed your stage and pattern of shedding. This can be done in person at one of our Central London clinics, or - if you are based outside London or abroad - via our Online Consultation.
