First American actress Anne Hathaway and now Merlin star Alex Vlahos have spoken out about what it was like to cut their hair short for roles in Les Misérables and new BBC series Privates respectively. Hathaway, known for her roles in The Devil Wears Prada, Alice In Wonderland and Once Day, underwent the severe hair loss despite being offered a double to go through the experience on her behalf.

Playing the leading role of Fantine in the new film production of Les Misérables, Hathaway has explained her decision to go through with the hair cut by saying that she felt: "An inherent empathy for the character and a feel for it and a desire to tell the truth in playing her."

"I was very scared the day we were going to do it. I was sort of regretting offering the option to Tom [Hooper- the film's director]. I was shaking."

"After it was done, I looked in the mirror and burst into tears. I realised that I couldn’t take it back. It changed my identity  .  .  .  I was inconsolable. I didn’t think I was that vain.’"

A Private Affair

Whilst not quite as big a change, Vlahos, known for his role as Mordred in the popular BBC series Merlin, has also spoken about how he dealt with the change to his hair style. The young actor will soon star in the BBC series Privates about one of the last groups of conscripts to enter National Service, and in a recent interview discussed how shaving his head was in his contract "in big bold letters".

However, Vlahos revealed that the eight actors playing the central roles in the show got used to coming in every day all sporting shaved heads, and became "incredibly tight knit" because of it.

A Question Of Choice

For Vlahos and Hathaway, their hair loss was a serious part of getting into character, but for many thousands of men and women across the UK and the world, hair loss is not a choice that is made for a character, but a stressful part of their everyday life. The main cause of hair loss is genetics, and as such the condition cannot be cured, therefore unlike Hathaway and Vlahos's hair, pattern hair loss will not fully grow back naturally.
