Question: Hi I've recently been getting small spots on my scalp witch is causing small patches of hair loss on my head is their anything that will help with this so far I have been using viviscal shampoo and after the first wash the water was very dirty and my hair started to look shiny and my scalp was less dry but they still have not gone
Answer: Hi, Aiden. There are a number of possible reasons for the spots on your scalp, however, it is difficult to tell what is happening without examining you or seeing photos.
It could be a scalp condition like psoriasis if the dry patches or 'spots' are also red. This could make the water appear dirty after shampooing if the dry build-up falls off. Similarly, it could be seborrhoeic dermatitis or any type of eczema. It may also be due to an allergic reaction to the Viviscal shampoo or bad acne on the scalp which can also damage some follicles - like pitting on the face - leaving small patches of hair loss.
Patchy hair loss is generally associated with the autoimmune condition Alopecia Areata - given studies have suggested people with one autoimmune condition are more likely to contract others, and there are a number of skin disorders, including psoriasis, which are autoimmune-related, this could what you are experiencing.
If you are in the habit of scratching or picking at the spots on your scalp, the hair loss may simply be as a result of hairs being accidentally plucked out whilst doing so.
The best thing to do is to consult a hair loss specialist who will be able to diagnose your condition and discuss appropriate treatment options with you. Belgravia's B4 treatment shampoo could be beneficial, and clinical therapy may also prove particularly useful in addressing scalp complaints.
