FOLLICULITIS DECALVANS

Do we treat folliculitis decalvans and how successful is treatment?

Belgravia does not treat folliculitis decalvans but the condition can be treated and depending on the severity, the results are limited. Folliculitis decalvans can sometimes be controlled and may be cleared up. You will need to get in contact with a dermatologist through your local GP in order to obtain treatment for folliculitis.

What is Folliculitis Decalvans?

Folliculitis decalvans is a form of scarring alopecia in which pustular folliculitis of the advancing margin of the bald patch is a conspicuous feature. The patches occur slowly and destruction of hair follicles causes permanent hair loss.

The cause of folliculitis decalvans is still uncertain, however, a failure in the immune response or in leurocyte (white blood cell) function is a common abnormality in people with this condition. Staphylococcus aureus bacteria may be the source of the pustules but more often only ordinary non-pathogenic (disease causing) organisms are present.

Folliculitis decalvans occurs in both sexes, women aged 30-60 years and men from adolescence onwards, and is very rare at infancy. Folliculitis decalvans is most common in the scalp but may affect other hair-bearing areas of the body.
