Why Should Men Use Minoxidil?

There are only two medications licensed or approved for use as a hair loss treatment by the MHRA and the FDA (the UK and US medical regulatory bodies) and whilst women can only use one, men can use both minoxidil and Propecia (finasteride 1mg). However, because Propecia was first made available as a hair loss treatment in 1997, before minoxidil, some people remain unaware of the benefits that combining the two treatments can bring.

Unlike finasteride 1mg, minoxidil is a topical treatment. This means that it can be applied directly to the areas of thinning hair on the scalp, allowing for highly targeted treatment.

Minoxidil DropperEasy to Apply

Applying minoxidil is easy, and can be done by the patient in a matter of seconds twice a day. There are a number of high strength minoxidil formulations offered at Belgravia and following the guide to applying minoxidil will help you to ensure that the scalp is absorbing as much as possible.

Whilst the exact mechanism that makes minoxidil so effective as a hair loss treatment is still the subject of scientific debate, the fact is that it can be highly effective, in particular for stubborn frontal balding, which finasteride 1mg does not generally help.

A Combined Approach

So, if you’re experiencing a receding hairline, or a ‘widow’s peak,’ a twice-daily minoxidil application can make all the difference in terms of hair regrowth. Ideally, men would use minoxidil alongside finasteride 1mg, due to the fact that the two medications work in different ways.

Propecia is great for treating all-over thinning along the top the scalp, and works by blocking DHT, the androgen that causes the follicular miniaturisation that leads to male pattern hair loss. Together, minoxidil and Propecia can halt hair loss and regrow thinning hair, providing that the areas of the scalp you’re aiming to treat aren’t shiny and totally bald.

To get an idea of the results that minoxidil and finasteride 1mg can achieve together, you can view over 1,000 before and during treatment photographs in our success story gallery.

At Belgravia, we create bespoke treatment plans tailored around the needs of each individual patient, combining the two key medications with a variety of treatment boosters such as the FDA cleared LaserComb which can speed up the regrowth process. So, there’s no need to rely on just one medication when it comes to tackling your hair loss.

False and misleading title. Plenty of literature out there demonstrates the potentially negative effects of minoxidil (excessive shedding) often outweight the benefits (regrowth). Further, its very ineffective for the hairline.

Whilst over-the-counter minoxidil might not have any effect on a receding hairline, Belgravia's high strength minoxidil creams have regrown thousands of hairlines for men experiencing male pattern hair loss. You can take a look at just some of the results on this page, which prove that it is effective on the hairline. In terms of shedding from minoxidil, this can happen in the first few months of taking minoxidil but it is only temporary, whereas if genetic hair loss is left untreated the hair loss will be permanent, so many people see short term shedding as preferable due to the regrowth that is subsequently achieved.
