Whereas minoxidil is treated as a dose dependent medication for hair loss, which can be varied in its formulation depending on the needs of the individual, Propecia is only ever available in a daily dose of 1mg finasteride, and doctors should never advise that this dosage is increased.
So, why can we vary the of dosage of one of the proven hair loss medications but not the other? Both Propecia and minoxidil have been licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA; they are safe medications that are approved for long term usage, and have been clinically proven to work effectively.
Doing the Dosage
However, taking a higher dosage of Propecia than 1mg daily can result in an increased likelihood of experiencing side effects, with no other benefits. Some men wrongly believe that taking 5mg of finasteride (which is available under the brand name Proscar to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia) will be a more effective treatment than the 1mg dose.
Why, then was 1mg settled on as the ideal daily dosage of Propecia, suitable for long term use? Extensive studies have been carried out that indicate that 1mg is the most effective dose for combating hair loss: it has greater benefits than an 0.2mg dose, and Propecia at this dosage has been tested over a period of five years, at the end of which only 0.3% of men experienced side effects.
It is also important to remember that the dosage should not be split into halves and taken separately, or any other such manipulations. Whilst Propecia has a half life of between five and six hours (this being the time it takes for the body to eliminate the drug) it does not mean that a half dosage should be taken every twelve hours to maintain levels of Propecia in the blood, as the blood level does not have a direct impact on hair loss.
So, in summary, it’s important to remember that it is finasteride at 1mg that has been licensed and approved by the UK and US medical regulatory bodies for treatment. Finasteride 5mg, available to treat a different condition to hair loss, does not help hair loss more than the 1mg dose, although it does increase the chance of side effects.
