Premiership footballer Wayne Rooney has spent nine hours in surgery this week undergoing another hair transplant, it has emerged. The 27 year old, who first had a transplant back in 2011, realised that the hair behind his initial transplant was beginning to thin.
So, Rooney decided to have a further procedure that dealt with two bald patches near the back of his scalp that made a thinning crown visible. However, had the footballing star acted before the balding became too profound to treat medically (once areas of the scalp are completely shiny and bald hair regrowth is unlikely) the need for surgery may have been prevented.
Second Time Lucky
It’s also important to remember that transplants need to be maintained along with the rest of the hair on the scalp, using clinically proven medication, so as such they are not the quick fix many men see them as.
Had Rooney been using the medication Propecia, which works well not only for shock loss immediately after a transplant, but to prevent further hair loss, a second transplant may have been avoided.
Propecia works by blocking DHT, the powerful androgen hormone created when testosterone is combined with the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. DHT causes follicular miniaturisation atop the scalp, which in turn leads to weaker, thinner hairs being produced.
Avoiding A Transplant
Once DHT is blocked, hair loss will hopefully be halted, although a second medication is often needed to regrow balding patches. Minoxidil, the only other medication licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA for hair loss, stimulates new growth in hair follicles.
Together, these two medications can achieve excellent results even with stubborn cases of hair loss where a high strength minoxidil has often been seen to prove effective – just take a look at our Male Pattern Hair Loss Treatment Success Stories. These two medications combine with a variety of treatment boosters, which ensure that hair is kept in a consistently good condition.
Of course, many men are unsure whether this type of treatment is right for them, and as such we offer free consultations where a diagnosis is made and a treatment plan compiled in order to give prospective clients an idea of the potential results achievable.
