Viviscal - How Effective is Viviscal Likely To Be for Hair Loss?

MHRA Medical License X   |   FDA Approval X   |   Food Supplement Tick

Viviscal is a food supplement that contains ‘AminoMar C Marine Complex’, Horsetail Extract and Vitamin C. Like all other hair loss supplements, there is no firm clinical evidence to indicate that Viviscal successfully prevents or reverses hair loss.

viviscalBelgravia’s hair loss specialists have recently been carrying out research on a number of natural products that are marketed for hair loss including Nourkrin, which is a very similar product to Viviscal, and other supplements such as Procerin and Provillus. Each of these products are food supplements and are therefore not licensed as medicines, which means they have no authorisation in the UK to make medicinal claims such as ’strengthens and promotes the growth of existing hair’ or ‘hairs become stronger, healthier and more vibrant’. Despite this fact, most seem to break the rules in their literature and advertising.

The lack of scientific evidence for these food supplements is the reason that none have been licensed for the prevention of hair loss in the UK or FDA approved in the USA. Theoretically these products could have hair growth properties but there is no clear evidence to confirm this as there is with the licensed hair loss medications.

Viviscal claim on their website to have carried out a successful scientific study for their product which has been published in ‘leading international journals’. Vague details of results of the study are given but similarly to many of the other natural products, the results seem far-fetched, and there is no detail of the journals that published the study, or the actual clinical details of the study itself.

There are only two hair loss treatments that are clinically proven to prevent and reverse hair loss.  These have undergone successful large-scale clinical studies and have been licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA. The MHRA and FDA are the government medical regulatory bodies who overlook the efficacy of medications and license or refuse licensing for medicinal products depending on effectiveness and safety. No natural product such as Viviscal has yet been licensed for hair loss. Information on the PROVEN HAIR LOSS TREATMENTS.

We have contacted Viviscal for more information on their clinical study so that we can provide details of any scientific evidence that they refer to on their website. We will keep the blog updated.

*16th June 2009 - Update - we have still not received details of the Viviscal clinical trial. This post will be updated with the necessary information should we receive details*
