Twins Prove Propecia Halts & Reverses Male Pattern Hair Loss

Male pattern hair loss is a genetic condition but can be controlled using Propecia (as well as a number of other hair loss products). Numerous studies have concluded it is the most effective hair loss treatment for male hair loss but the perhaps the most interesting results come from the studies of hair loss amongst twins.

twins & male pattern hair loss“One of the advantages of having a study with identical twins is that we can see the ‘before’ and ‘after’ effect simultaneously, since each brother is an exact genetic copy of the other,” explained Dr. Dow B. Stough, a dermatologist at Burke Research in Hot Springs, Arkansas and an investigator in one study.

Through the use of identical twins, studies have provided further evidence that Propecia significantly reduces hair loss progression and restores hair growth in men with male pattern hair loss.

In one study published in the European Journal of Dermatology, nine pairs of identical male twins aged 20 to 45, diagnosed with male pattern hair loss, took part in a year-long study. One twin was randomly selected to take Propecia (with active ingredient finasteride) 1 mg while the other took a placebo. Neither the investigator nor the brothers knew who was receiving the treatment until the study was completed.

Over the study period, three methods were used to measure treatment efficacy – global head photography, hair count and participant responses to a questionnaire. Based on analysis of photographs of the crown (vertex) of the head and the front of the scalp, Propecia significantly improved hair growth (19 times out of 20) at the end of one year, compared to the twin taking a placebo who experienced further hair loss.

“The twins treated with finasteride showed improvements in all three measurement methods used to assess efficacy including patient satisfaction,” Dr. Stough said. “Nearly 90 percent of the twins who received finasteride noticed that the appearance of their hair improved.”

Propecia has been known to have possible sexual side-effects in less than 2% of users but no side-effects were experienced by participants in the twin study.

Propecia has a long-running track record of continued effectiveness in preventing and treating hair loss. Previous clinical trials have shown that after 12 months, 86% of men who used Propecia stopped losing their hair, while 65% of men experienced increased hair regrowth. Further studies of men treated for up to 24 months demonstrated that Propecia stopped hair loss in 83% of men, and increased hair growth in 80% of men, whereas those on the placebo showed further loss.

The effectiveness of Propecia lies in its mechanism. Its active ingredient, finasteride, is an anti-androgen and inhibitor of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) formation.

Hereditary hair loss in men, or male pattern hair loss, is the result of a genetic predisposition in which the hair follicles are particularly sensitive to the adverse effects of DHT. DHT is a male hormone, or androgen, that is produced when testosterone comes into contact with an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. It inhibits the growth of new hair cells within the genetically sensitised hair follicles, which in turn leads to male hair loss and in many cases, eventual baldness.

Propecia effectively blocks the formation of DHT in the scalp and halts the genetic process of hair loss. In general, daily use of Propecia for three months or more is necessary before improvements are seen. This may simply have something to do with the hair growth life-cycle but the results are worth the wait.

Propecia’s results can be significantly maximised by the use of certain other hair loss treatments and booster products.
