Thrush Medication Used To Treat Female Hair Loss

monistat thrush cream hair loss womenThe thrush medication Monistat (the brand name of the antifungal miconazole) is being used as a women’s hair loss treatment, it emerges, and the internet is rife with anecdotal evidence that it works.

So, why is Monistat being used by women hoping to treat their hair loss? The antifungal agent micazanole nitrate, the active ingredient in the medication, has a similar chemical structure to another anti-fungal agent called ketoconazole, which has been proven to block DHT.

Anti-Fungal For Hair Loss?

DHT is an androgen hormone that causes follicular miniaturisation atop the scalp, which leads to weaker, wispy hair being produced. There is a DHT blocker hair loss medication already available that has been MHRA licensed and FDA approved for this purpose, called Propecia, though this is only suitable for men.

Of course, whilst Monistat may have a positive affect on the hair, it has not been medically approved for this purpose, which means that possible side effects haven’t been properly evaluated. The cream already has a list of side effects when used to treat thrush that include rashes, itching, irritation, burning sensation and headaches. There is also anecdotal evidence that women who applied the cream to their scalp experienced headaches and discomfort.

So, based on the potential side effects, the lack of substantial proof that Monistat works as a hair loss treatment, and the fact that blocking DHT in women carries potential risks if they want to get pregnant, sticking to a proven hair loss treatment seems to be the best option.

The Proven Approach

There is only one proven for women hair loss product: minoxidil. Like Monistat it is a topical treatment, but rather than blocking DHT, minoxidil stimulates hair regrowth on the scalp. Belgravia pharmacies produce minoxidil in a variety of strengths, and a hair loss specialist would be able to advise you on your optimum daily dosage.

Minoxidil has formed the basis for many successful treatment programmes for women’s hair loss at Belgravia. Along with a variety of hair growth boosters, such as the nutritional supplement Hair Vitalics and the FDA cleared LaserComb, minoxidil forms the basis for a comprehensive treatment plan. So, if you’re a woman looking to treat her hair loss, don’t rely on internet rumours when a proven treatment already exists.
