The Importance of Sulphur for Healthy Hair Growth

Despite being critical to the healthy development of cells within the human body, few people realise the importance of sulphur in their diet. As the third most common mineral within the body after calcium and phosphorus, sulphur is an essential component for healthy skin, nails, hair and joints.

How does sulphur affect hair growth?

Sulphur rich foods Belgravia Centre for hair lossHuman hair is made from a protein called keratin, which is high in sulphur content. The presence of sulphur gives healthy hair its strength and elasticity; conversely, the absence of enough sulphur leads to brittle hair that is easily broken.

Hair growth is governed by a three-stage cycle: growing, resting and shedding. For men and women worried about hair loss, it is essential to try to extend the growing and resting phases. Sulphur helps to extend the growth phase, ensuring that hair is longer and healthier throughout the cycle, reducing the appearance of thinning hair.

Are you getting enough sulphur?

If you have brittle hair, fragile nails and/or dry skin, this could indicate a lack of sulphur in your diet.

If your primary concern is hair loss, it’s important to realise that diet alone cannot prevent or cure it. However, including the right amount of sulphur in your diet can certainly help to bolster the overall health of your hair.

Here are some foods that can be incorporated into a balanced diet to improve hair health:

Brussel Sprouts, broccoli and other green vegetablesPoultry
Brussel sprouts
Wheat germ

These foods provide the raw materials for keratin synthesis.

The Belgravia Centre has also formulated a unique dietary supplement that contains the recommended daily allowance of all the vitamins and minerals needed for healthy hair growth, including sulphur. Hair Vitalics is routinely included in our custom treatment plans to tackle hair loss, helping to ensure that clients have everything they need to promote healthy, natural hair growth.
