Survey Reveals Cultural Attitudes towards Male Pattern Baldness

Asian man thinning hair the belgravia centre for hair lossAccording to a recent survey, one in five men in Singapore have been to see a doctor about their hair loss. The survey by a pharmaceutical company was commissioned to find out more about attitudes and incidences of hair loss in Singapore, the Philippines, India, Malaysia and Taiwan.

It revealed that Singaporean men were more likely to feel embarrassed about their hair loss and feel that they were unattractive than their counterparts elsewhere in the region. Seventy percent of Singapore respondents said that thinning hair was ‘not cool’ and made them feel less attractive to the opposite sex.

It was also revealed that Singapore men spent far more on hair loss treatments than those in neighbouring countries, spending on average 310 Singapore Dollars (£153) a month on treatments such as medicated shampoo, Propecia and Minoxidil. Others in the region were spending the equivalent of between £21 and £147 a month.

The survey focused on Male Pattern Baldness, and was conducted online, involving 1,057 men between the ages of 20 and 40 in the five countries.

Cultural factors in the perception of Male Pattern Baldness

This difference in attitudes towards hair loss in the Asia Pacific region highlights how cultural factors can affect the experience of an individual with hair loss and how likely they are to seek treatment.

In the UK, we are faced with images of celebrity hair loss and treatment on an almost daily basis. For some individuals, this constant focus on cosmetic looks and hairlines may put extra pressure on them to seek treatment for their own hair loss, or otherwise conceal it.

But whether or not an individual wishes to treat their hair loss or let nature take its course is a highly personal choice. While some men may feel comfortable with the onset of Male Pattern Baldness, others may wish to take action to prevent it. For this latter group, there are plenty of options available.

Treatments for Male Pattern Baldness

All Products New LaserComb Medium-SmallAt The Belgravia Centre we specialise in treating those with Male Pattern Baldness and other hair loss conditions. Our hair loss experts have a great deal of experience in preventing hair loss and re-growing hair, and we have a wide range of tools at our disposal.

The main pharmaceutical treatments we utilise are Propecia and Minoxidil. Both have been scientifically proven to be effective in tackling Male Pattern Baldness, and are licensed for this purpose by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the UK and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US. After an assessment of the specific hair loss suffered by the individual, our hair loss experts will prescribe the most suitable strength and dosage, before issuing a prescription that will be fulfilled by our in-house pharmacy.

We support the use of these pharmaceutical treatments with a range of methods. Regular clinical treatments are one avenue which may be explored, while handheld laser combs, nutritional supplements and other ‘hair growth boosters’ may be used as needed. All of our clients are monitored throughout their hairloss treatment programmes by our hair loss experts.
