Question: My doctor give me nizoral shampoo to treat hair dandruff and it led to severe hair loss… I wish give me advise to stopping hair loss

Answer: Hi, Saja. Although it is considered uncommon – affecting less than 1 in 100 people – Nizoral shampoo does list hair loss as a potential side effect.

According to the Patient Information Leaflet – the document which should have been inside the box your shampoo came in – the product can cause ‘Inflamed hair follicles, hair loss or changes in hair texture’.

Although we cannot confirm for sure without a bit more information or assessing you, the shedding you are experiencing is most likely due to a condition called Telogen Effluvium as a result of an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis. This causes diffuse hair loss across your whole scalp and tends to last no more than six months. Regrowth can often be accelerated by following a personalised telogen effluvium treatment course.

It is important to remove the underlying cause of the shedding so we recommend you stop using the product immediately. If the shampoo was the sole cause of your hair loss it will recover. Allow your scalp to rest and recover by using a gentle shampoo daily or every other day. If your dandruff persists, clinical therapy scalp treatments tailored to your specific needs can be incorporated into your hair loss treatment plan by your specialist.

If you have a genetic propensity to male pattern baldness then this condition may have been triggered or worsened by the current issue you are experiencing. If this is the case, once the initial shedding dies down you will find that your hair fall is located around the top of the scalp only. This is a permanent condition but can be treated with a customised male hair loss treatment course.
