Find out more about the simple ‘Reverse Washing’ trick that’s said to help your hair stay healthy whilst adding volume, and how it may be of particular interest to people with hair loss.
The Reverse Washing method involves turning your usual hair cleansing routine on its head and applying your conditioner first.
The theory is that by applying your conditioner first and leaving it for a couple of minutes or so, the nutrients will be soaked up by the hair as normal. Then, by shampooing your hair after rinsing out your conditioner, you ensure all traces of the conditioner are washed away. This is important as, as anyone who’s ever forgotten to rinse their conditioner out will tell you, even having traces of conditioner left in your hair can weigh it down, making it appear lank and lifeless.
This beauty hack may be particularly beneficial to people with thin or thinning hair as clean hair that isn’t weighed down by conditioning product gives the illusion of appearing much fuller.
Belgravia’s senior trichologist, Leonora Doclis agrees that the concept of Reverse Washing makes sense. “We generally advise clients with thin and/or oily hair not to use conditioner or to only apply it to the very ends of the hair. We often recommend women apply conditioner only on the ends of the hair for the same reasoning behind Reverse Washing – it can make the hair heavy during the day if you apply conditioner all over.”
As long as you are using good quality shampoos and conditioners suited to your hair type, it seems that, especially for men or women with thinning hair, this may be one beauty trick to try!
Restoring thinning hair
Of course this is a purely cosmetic effect and will only help the hair to look thicker; it will not treat the cause of your thinning; Reverse Washing is certainly no replacement for professional hair loss treatments.
If you want to restore your hair and increase its density by regrowing hair you have lost, visit a specialist for an expert diagnosis.
