Question: I have bald areas where my hair has been pulled by corn-rows
Question: I am an afro-caribbean 26 year old woman and have had my hair in a corn-row style since I was about 12 years old. Where the hair has been pulling there are areas of hair loss that are getting wider and wider. How can I stop this?
Answer: Well the first and most obvious course of action is to remove your corn-rows immediately. This is the cause of the hair loss and as long as they are pulled tight the areas of baldness will stretch wider and wider. The condition is called Traction Alopecia and minoxidil cream can be successful in treating it. Results depend on the extent of the hair loss and how much the hair follicles have been damaged by the constant pulling. Generally, smooth areas of hair loss will not be restored but quite frequently thin areas of hair can be thickened up.
