The 40 Year-Old Hair Loss Dilemma

Posted on April 11th, 2012 by Chriss, under Female Hair Loss, Hair Loss | No Comments | Ask A Question

Female Hair Loss The Daily Mail Mar '12 The Belgravia CentreThe Daily Mail last week highlighted the issue of female hair loss, a topic which is not usually accorded sympathetic reporting. The report discussed many of the factors faced by women in their 40s which can lead to patchy hair loss or even a receding hairline.

Hairdresser Jean Nôel de Casanove attributes female hair loss to a number of factors including weight-loss and general diet, pregnancy, hormonal changes and over-styling of hair. De Casanove believes that in their 40s, women’s hair “simply starts to lose its oomph.”

However, the situation is far from hopeless: there is much that can be done to resolve hair loss in women.

Oestrogen fluctuation contributes to female hair loss

It’s true that as women enter their 40s, their bodies enter a phase known as ‘peri-menopause’ which causes their hormone levels to change as a precursor to the menopause proper. Of particular relevance to the issue of hair loss are the levels of the hormone oestrogen.

Oestrogen is responsible for counteracting the hormone testosterone. In women prone to the genetic hairloss condition Androgenic Alopecia (also known as female pattern hair loss), increased testosterone levels leads to increased levels of the androgen DHT, which attacks the hair follicles. This attack causes the hair follicles to cease production.

As DHT affects more hair follicles, women find that they experience the loss of more and more hair, leading to patches of extremely thin hair, or even baldness. The condition then continues to develop as oestrogen levels drop further.

Oestrogen is also essential for general hair health and regulation of the growth cycle itself. Human hair works on a cycle of growth and shedding, but if the growth phase is shortened, so too is the length of each strand of hair before it falls out. The effect of lower levels of oestrogen in the bloodstream is shorter growth cycles, resulting in hair thinning.

By the age of 50, around half of all women experience thinning of the hair to at least some degree.

Treating Female Pattern Hair Loss and Oestrogen-related hair loss

The Belgravia Centre has successfully treated many women in their 40s, 50s and beyond for Androgenic Alopecia and other forms of hairloss. Depending on the specific needs of the client, female hair loss treatments can include our own formulations of minoxidil, the only medically proven hair loss treatment for women.

Because diet plays a critical part in keeping existing hair healthy and assisting new growth, our unique Hair Vitalics dietary supplement has been formulated to contain everything required for healthy hair. A unique blend of vitamins, minerals and herbal extracts provide all the fundamental building blocks of new hair which is then delivered directly to the client’s hair follicles.

Clients may also be offered the FDA-cleared LaserComb which uses focused beams of light to stimulate the cells of the scalp, speeding up new growth and revitalizing and thickening existing hair.

Mattel reaches out to young hairloss sufferers with bald Barbie

Bald and Beautiful Princess Barbie The Belgravia Centre

How she could look...

Hair-loss is unpleasant at all times of life, but it is particularly upsetting for young people. For children who are losing their hair, baldness can be upsetting, even frightening – especially when it is a symptom of an underlying disorder or side-effect of medical treatment, such as chemotherapy. Furthermore, children who look different frequently suffer from bullying. Even when baldness is suffered by a beloved family member, young children can find the sudden change profoundly unsettling

However, there are those who are trying to make things that bit easier for young kids who are suffering from hairloss, by normalising baldness in order to make it less threatening. Last month, we reported on our blog that a campaign had been launched on Facebook to encourage toy manufacturer Mattel to produce a “Beautiful and Bald Barbie”; a hairless version of the fashion doll, complete with headscarves, wigs, hats and other accessories.

“Beautiful and Bald Barbie”

Bowing to the sizeable public demand – the Facebook campaign has over 150,000 likes – this week, Mattel announced that they will be commissioning a special batch of just such a doll; and rather than sell them, they will be supplying them directly to hospitals and hospices. “We have offered small quantities for our Mattel subsidiaries internationally to provide to charity partners in various other countries,” Alan Hilowitz, spokesperson for Mattel, said earlier this week.

“We made the decision not to sell these dolls at retail stores and profit from them, but rather more directly and immediately get these into the hands of children who can most benefit from a play experience with these dolls.”

Baldness: Not just a problem for older people

Efforts such as those of Mattel and the “Beautiful and Bald Barbie” campaign are to be welcomed as a considerate and charitable attempt to ease the emotional adjustment to losing one’s hair at a tender age. For many young people who experience hairloss, such as those undergoing chemotherapy or who suffer from genetic conditions such as Alopecia Universalis, there really is little that can be done to avoid hairloss, and so any effort to make them feel better about their symptoms is of great importance.

André Metzger Wrestling His Way into US Olympic Team (with Receding Hairline)

Andre Metzger Wrestler The Belgravia CentreNicknamed ‘Coach’, André Metzger has announced his intention to come out of retirement and return to the world of competitive wrestling. Racing against time and age, the 52-year-old is preparing for the Olympic wrestling trials in Iowa City later this month.

Despite boasting a mop of dark hair, age appears to be catching up with Metzger as he clearly has a receding hairline at the temples. Metzger’s career originally retired from wrestling nearly 20 years ago, but feels he has unfinished business in the ring.

“I know I can do it,” said Metzger when asked to rate his chances of gaining a place on the Olympic team. During the trials, Metzger will be wrestling with men half his own age although Rulon Gardner and Kurt Angle are also hoping to make a comeback despite being in their 40s. All three of these mature contestants clearly show signs of hair loss with Angle resorting to shaving his head to disguise the signs of male pattern balding.

Metzger, Gardner and Angle will all be up against much younger competitors who will probably be showing fewer signs of hair loss. Careful treatment by a hair loss expert could help redress the balance, if not in physique, then in promoting hair regrowth.

More Hair Loss This Week? Christmas Could Be To Blame

Posted on April 5th, 2012 by Chriss, under Female Hair Loss, Hair Loss, Male Hair Loss | No Comments | Ask A Question

Christmas Stress Hair LossOver the last couple of weeks, you may have noticed more hair than usual in the plughole or on your pillow, prompting you to wonder why your hair is falling out. There are many possible causes of hair loss, but few people consider the impact that Christmas has on their health – even several months later.

Christmas is typically one of the most stressful periods of the year. Late nights, shopping, preparations, finishing up year-end work, over eating and partying can lead to exhaustion and stress which takes its toll on many aspects of health – including hair.

April and stress-related hair loss

The clocks have moved forward, the daffodils are in bloom and last Christmas seems like a lifetime ago. However, Spring-time can be when the first signs of stress-related hair loss caused by the festive season start to appear. A form of patchy hair loss known as Telogen Effluvium is known to be related to stress levels, although the symptoms do not appear until approximately three months after the stressful period has ended.

Normally hair grows in a cycle with up to 20% of hair follicles being in a resting phase at any one time. During this period, known as telogen, the resting follicles shed the attached hair – usually between 80 and 100 every day. The remaining hair follicles continue to grow normally preventing the appearance of bald patches.

When affected by Telogen Effluvium however, a person’s hair follicles enter the telogen phase prematurely, causing more hair to fall out than usual.

Treating Telogen Effluvium

Fortunately hair loss caused by Telogen Effluvium tends to be temporary – regrowth normally begins again shortly after shedding has completed. However men and women experiencing significant hair loss would be well advised to seek professional advice to receive an accurate diagnosis.

The Belgravia Centre has many years’ experience of successfully treating a wide variety of hair loss conditions including Telogen Effluvium. Our clients all receive a customised treatment plan designed to promote maximum hair regrowth through the use of medications and other complementary therapies including The Belgravia Centre’s own Hair Vitalics supplement.
