We all know that we should eat well. But did you know that your food can affect your hair? An unhealthy diet can cause nutritional deficiencies, which in turn can sometimes result in hair loss. Two minerals important for healthy hair are iron and zinc.
Are you getting enough iron?
For younger men and women who notice their hair receding unexpectedly, anaemia due to lack of iron could be a potential cause. The Journal of American Dermatology notes, “Several studies have examined the relationship between iron deficiency and hair loss. Some suggest that iron deficiency may be related to Alopecia Areata, Androgenetic Alopecia, Telogen Effluvium, and diffuse hair loss.”
Although scientists have been unable to conclusively prove anaemia as a definite cause of thinning hair or balding, there is evidence to suggest that iron deficiency can play a part. As a result, it is well worth looking at diet as part of the initial investigation into hair loss. Other symptoms of anaemia include tiredness, headaches, breathlessness, pale skin, and mouth ulcers.
Foods such as red meat, egg yolk and green vegetables all contain iron so eat your greens if you notice your hair is thinning.
What about zinc?
Zinc is essential for the absorption of vitamins and healthy hormonal balance – another recognised cause of hair loss. Studies in mice have shown that zinc supplements have a beneficial effect on hair regrowth, leading medical professionals to suggest that similar supplements may also have a similar effect on humans.
As well as hair loss, other symptoms of zinc deficiency include loss of appetite, weight loss, and diminished smell and taste.
Oysters are very high in zinc but of course these are not everyone’s cup of tea. Lean roast beef comes high up the list too. Vegetarians needn’t worry though. Sesame seeds and tahini contain zinc. So do roasted pumpkin and melon seeds, and they come free with melons and pumpkins – an extra bonus.
