Matt Damon: A Hair Loss History

Matt Damon

With a career that has spanned four decades and roles in over sixty films, Matt Damon is one of Hollywood’s most successful actors, known for his roles in the Bourne film series, Saving Private Ryan, and Ocean’s Eleven. Looking back at his career in pictures, we track the star’s different hairstyles, revealing a slow but steady rate of hair loss.

In his early film roles in the 80’s, Damon exhibits a full and healthy head of hair, and thinning has certainly been gradual over the years, with little difference visible in the 90’s and early 00’s. Damon’s preference for playing tough guys on screen has meant a short back and sides has been his consistent style, though we can now see a receding hairline developing, something that can begin at any point in a man’s life after puberty.

A Sudden Change

Compared with a year ago, Damon’s hair appears both thinner and greyer. This is completely normal for men to experience hair thinning as they age, the technical term for which is androgenic alopecia, though it is more commonly called male pattern hair loss. It is caused by the male hormone DHT that inhibits the growth of new hair cells, leading to hair loss and baldness. An effective hair loss treatment package can stop the higher rate of hair loss and potentially regrow thinning hair, so Damon needn’t worry that his male pattern baldness is untreatable.

Lifestyle Choices

If, however, the rate of his hair loss is worrying Damon, he might consider other factors behind the shedding other than genetics. Whilst male pattern baldness is primarily caused by hormones as explained above, factors such as stress and diet can also play a part.
