According to Dubai specialists, Male Pattern Baldness is more common in the United Arab Emirates than many other parts of the world. This hypothesis has been bandied about for years but new figures confirm that around 60% of men in the UAE are expected to experience hair loss at some point, whilst the average of men experiencing hair loss worldwide is around 40%.
Why is Male Pattern Baldness so common in the UAE?
While Male Pattern Baldness can be triggered by a range of factors, the extreme dry weather and high pollution in this region could be leading to the increase. Other potential factors that could lead to hair loss in the UAE include a Vitamin D deficiency due to lack of sun exposure, typical levels of stress in workers, and possibly hard (chlorinated) water.
As we have previously reported, the UAE used to see a high proportion of those who were thinning beginning local hair loss treatment plans without a full diagnosis. However, Dr Dimitrios Ziakas, who works at the Al Borj Medical Centre in Dubai, believes the rising numbers of cases are also now bringing better awareness of hair loss conditions and treatments: “When I started here, people were coming to me when it was too late. Now they are much younger and we are seeing a lot more patients.”
Combating genetics and other factors
While it is difficult to assess the interplay of different factors and how these specifically influence the high levels of Male Pattern Baldness in the UAE, it remains the fact that this is still the most common cause of hair loss worldwide. Also known as Androgenetic Alopecia, this type of hereditary thinning affects up to 50 per cent of men by their 50th birthday.
Dr Ziakas sees over 500 patients a year and has performed over 3,000 hair transplants in the UAE. He comments: “The impact of the surgery or medication can be huge on confidence. It is important now for how men look. One patient who lost his hair said that the grief was worse than when he lost his dad.”
Treating hair loss abroad
There are two clinically-proven treatments for male pattern baldness – finasteride 1mg and minoxidil – and these can produce significant regrowth whilst preventing further hair loss in cases of genetic shedding.
For people living in the UAE, and many other parts of the world, The Belgravia Centre offers an internationally available home-use service. This includes the option of using alcohol-free treatment formulas.
