Low Carb Diets May Accelerate Hair Loss

A two-year study comparing the effect of low-carbohydrate versus low-fat diets in a group of obese adults has found that while both were equally effective at helping participants lose weight, the low-carbohydrate diet was more effective at increasing “good” HDL cholesterol and lowering diastolic blood pressure.

However, the study, which was published in the August 3, 2010 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, also found that those following the low-carb diet reported more side effects, including hair loss, bad breath and constipation. After six months, 45% of the low-carb group reported hair loss, compared to only 21% of the low-fat group.

Diets that exclude certain food groups can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies that starve your hair follicles of nutrients, causing accelerated hair loss, and so it is advisable to consult a dietician or nutritionist before embarking on any restricted eating regime. I loose about 20 hair everytime i comb my hair on a daily basis. I take my multi vits,vit e , zinc,vit c everyday and iron tab twice a wk. I also colour my hair with no ammonia and other chemicals in it,colour from holland and barrett.

This article is so full of crap. There are no secret nutrients in Carbs. carbohydrates are just starch/sugar. That's it.

Hi Michael, fruit - which is obviously known to be nutrient-rich - is a simple carb and is banned in a number of low carb diets. As such, studies have linked deficiencies, particularly of vitamin C, to low carb diets. This study also shows how vitamin B7, vitamin D, vitamin E, chromium, iodine and molybdenum needs are unlikely to be met by some of the most popular of these diet plans.
