Losing Hair In The Shower? Don’t Stop Shampooing Regularly

We see many patients who come in for a consultation after noticing an increased amount of hair fall in the shower. This is one of the most common ways that people realise that they are experiencing hair loss (we should lose around 100 hairs per day) and it can be a stressful experience. It’s no surprise, then, that many patients aren’t keen to wash their hair in case it makes the hair loss worse.

Man Washing HairSome patients also notice that if they don’t wash their hair for a few days, particularly when using styling products, their shedding slows down. However, this isn’t because washing your hair is increasing your hair loss, but because the sebum and styling products can cause shed hairs that have become detached from the scalp to stick to the remaining hair. If you are not washing – or brushing – them out as often then they will linger for slightly longer than they would otherwise.

Wash Your Way To Better Hair

Not only does washing your hair make no difference to your hairloss, but it’s also important to keep your hair and scalp healthy by regularly washing them with suitable shampoos. By washing your hair and scalp, you remove build up of sebum and skin, which can clog pores and make it harder for new hair to grow through, especially if the build-up leads to certain scalp conditions. Freshly washed thinning hair also looks fuller.

Belgravia provides shampoos and conditioners that are tailored to your specific type of hair loss and other factors such as any scalp conditions you may have. Of course, whilst our hair care products ensure that your hair is kept in tip top condition, they cannot regrow lost hair and stop further hair loss.

How To Stop The Shedding

However, a comprehensive hair loss treatment programme that includes at least one of the clinically-proven hair loss medications that have been licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA for treating androgenetic alopecia can yield brilliant results. The first of these medications, finasteride 1mg, which is often known by one of its brand names: Propecia, works by blocking DHT, the naturally occurring androgen that causes hair thinning anywhere along the top of the head and/or a receding hairline in those with a genetic predisposition. Once the DHT has been blocked, hair follicles can recover and begin to produce healthy hair once again.

The second proven for hair loss medication, minoxidil, is applied directly to the thinning areas and appears to stimulate new, healthy hair growth. The two medications are highly complementary, and even stubborn thin areas can be treated using formulations of high strength minoxidil from the range available at Belgravia’s in-clinic pharmacies. When combined with various other treatment boosters such as the FDA cleared LaserComb, there’s every chance that shedding too much hair in the shower will become a thing of the past.

Hello Alan,

You may notice your hair fall more in or after a shower as you are more focussed on it then. However, if the level of shedding is higher than normal, we would expect this to be from male pattern baldness, but you should consult a hair loss specialist to confirm this. If this is the case, there are treatments for male pattern hair loss and they are absolutely suitable for someone of your age. A professional will be able to assess your personal suitability after discussing your medical background and can recommend the most effective treatments for you after this.

If you would like to speak to one of our team, please arrange a free hair loss consultation at one of our Central London clinics by sending us a message or calling 020 7730 6666. If you are based outside London or the UK, please complete this quick and easy Online Consultation.

Hi Hesam, it is usual for people to lose around 100 hairs per day so this sounds completely normal.
