Journalist Turns Down ‘I’m A Celebrity’ Because of Alopecia

Respected journalist Sarah Vine, wife of politician Michael Gove, has spoken out about being invited to appear on reality TV show, ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’.

I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of HereWriting in her column for the Daily Mail, Sarah revealed she had turned down the opportunity to join celebrities such as Tinchy Stryder and TOWIE’s Gemma Collins in the jungle, because she suffers from the hair loss condition Alopecia Areata.

She explained her decision: “I politely declined…The reason? I’m far too high maintenance…there’s the hair, which as some readers may remember, is not entirely my own. And while I may be fairly open about my experiences of Alopecia, I’m not quite ready to reveal all on live TV”.

Alopecia as a teenager

Sarah Vine - Alopecia Areata Causes Writer to Turn Down I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of HereSarah often writes about her hair loss, which started in her teens: “For most of my adult life, I have suffered from progressive Alopecia Areata” she said in a recent interview, “I was quite a stressed child. I was trying to be thin — as all girls are. I’m not naturally thin so it was hard work. I did every rubbish silly diet. And I’m sure that’s what contributed to my hair starting to fall out. I was messing about with my body at a very crucial stage in my development”.

The exact cause of Alopecia is unknown, but it is classed as an auto-immune disorder, typically triggered by a stressful event. There is no firm evidence that diet or lifestyle choices can trigger Alopecia Areata, although diet is an important factor in overall hair health.

This isn’t the first time that hair loss has stopped Sarah from taking part in activities, “…losing your hair as a woman is a huge, huge, huge thing…that de-feminises you, it shatters your confidence. I shed so many tears over it”, and she ended up stopping exercising “because the hair management was too much”.

Hiding alopecia with a weave

Sarah Vine Regrets Hair Weave to Disguise AlopeciaSeeing a picture of herself with patchy hair loss prompted Sarah to get a weavelike a permanent wig but weaved into my own hair and tightened every six weeks”, to make her appear fuller. However, unlike hair loss treatments, which encourage hair to grow gradually, a weave is instant, and Sarah struggled to adjust to suddenly having such a large amount of hair.

Weaves can also damage healthy hair, leading to hair loss from a condition called Traction Alopecia. This occurs when excessive, constant tension caused by weaves or hair extensions causes the remaining hair follicles they are attached to the scalp by are weakened and stretched out of shape, causing hair loss. So, had Sarah decided to keep the weave in order to make her hair appear fuller, she may actually have risked causing further hair loss.

Treatment for Alopecia Areata

Before turning to weaves, extensions or hair pieces, anyone concerned about losing their hair should, in the first instance, consult a professional hair loss expert to explore options for natural regrowth.
