John Goodman Talks About Being Bald To Bald Reporter

Actor John Goodman, perhaps best known for playing Dan Conner in the television series Roseanne, has been talking about his experience of playing a bald loan shark in new movie The Gambler.

Enjoying temporary baldness

The actor spoke to the Today show reporter Matt Lauer, who himself is completely bald, about going hairless in this remake of the 1974 film, which is released later this month.

Lauer was interested to know if he enjoyed being bald, asking, “…what did you think? It was liberating though wasn’t it?” Although Goodman agreed that he liked it, he admitted he was pleased to be able to grow his hair back.

John Goodman isn’t the first actor to shave off his hair for a film role. Many film stars, including Christian Bale, Matt Damon and Harrison Ford have previously gone bald on screen. The Golden Globe winner has also been known to grow his hair for film roles, sporting a pony tail for his role in Flight opposite Denzel Washington.

Aged 62, Goodman is one of the lucky men who still have a full head of hair. As bald Lauer pointed out, “you’ll never have to worry, I was looking as I walked behind you and you have a full head going.“I have other things to worry about,” Goodman quipped back.

Baldness from male hair loss

John Goodman With The Gambler Co-Star Mark WahlbergAll joking aside, Lauer is probably right, as most men who lose all their hair start to see hair loss in their twenties, or sometimes earlier. Men who start losing hair later in life may only develop thinning hair by old age, rather than displaying advanced signs of male hair loss.

Many men with androgenic alopecia who have a thinning crown or a receding hairline like to keep their hair very short in order to make these balding areas less noticeable. We are often asked if, like John Goodman (pictured right with The Gambler co-star, Mark Wahlberg, 43), they will be able to grow hair back again if they shave it off.

The answer is that, as long as your hair follicles are still active, it is likely that you will be able to resume normal hair production, however the signs of balding you had before shaving your head will still be there, and may actually have worsened as male hair loss is a progressive condition.

Regrowing hair after shaving your head

If you initially shaved your head to help disguise male pattern baldness, the most common form of hair loss in men, the earlier you start treatment, the better the results are likely to be. Once the condition progresses to true baldness – where the skin takes on a smooth and shiny appearance due to the hair follicles dying and scarring over – treatment is unlikely to be successful.

The best way to combat male hair loss is to seek specialist help early on, then follow a comprehensive hair loss treatment programme, especially tailored to your stage and pattern of shedding.

Often men find the combination approach to treatment the most beneficial. This includes the use of Propecia, a clinically-proven oral tablet which blocks DHT (the cause of genetic hair loss) from reaching the hair follicles, alongside topical applications of Minoxidil, the first medically-proven hair loss treatment, which stimulates the follicles, helping to promote regrowth. Hair growth boosters can also improve the hair’s condition and the efficacy of the treatments.
