Legendary James Bond actor Roger Moore has revealed in an interview that his hair fell out after a bought of severe pneumonia last year. The veteran actor, 85, told in a recent interview with the Calgary Herald how the illness kept him in bed for three weeks as well as causing hair loss.
You Only Live Twice
The interview cites antibiotics as the cause of Moore’s hair loss, which is interesting as the link between antibiotics and hair loss is still unclear. There is much anecdotal evidence that antibiotics cause hair loss, but this can often be a case of people assuming it is the antibiotics, rather than the reason they’re being taken, which causes the excess shedding.
So, if, like Moore, a serious illness has confined you to bed, what kind of hair loss might this cause? Telogen effluvium is a patchy hair loss condition that occurs when hair follicles prematurely and rapidly enter the telogen (resting) stage of the hair growth cycle. After remaining in this stage for several weeks, the hair sheds, leaving what appears to be bald patches. It can occur when a sudden shock or stress to the body occurs from illness or medication.
Illness: A License To Kill Hair?
If your illness is a long one, it may be that the hair sheds when you are still unwell, although often patients are completely recovered when the shedding happens. It is also worth noting that because many of the triggers behind telogen effluvium are unique to women (pregnancy and child birth, stopping hormonal contraception) it is a condition more often seen in women but which can occur in men.
With telogen effluvium hair should grow back itself within six months of the shedding. However, in some cases hair does not return to its previous condition, and in cases such as this we have successfully treated many patients’ hair loss using minoxidil. This clinically proven hair loss treatment is applied to the patches of loss, and comes in a variety of strengths with various added ingredients.
Stubborn patches of loss have responded very well to our high strength minoxidil creams, which can have a daily dosage of up to 18% (much higher than the 2% formulation for women sold in chemists).
Saving The Day
For women, who cannot use DHT blocker Propecia, minoxidil can also be combined with ingredients such as Medroxyprogesterone (MPG) and caffeine, which appear to block DHT when applied locally, and azelaic acid, which appears to inhibit enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which is crucial in the creation of DHT itself. Minoxidil has formed a key part of many patients with telogen effluvium’s successful hair loss treatment programmes
If you’re unsure exactly what is causing your hair loss, a free consultation with a hair loss specialist can quickly establish not just the cause of your loss, but a bespoke hair loss treatment plan is also created, though there is no obligation to go ahead with it. Sudden hair loss can be scary, and we’ve supported many patients through both the practical and emotional sides of their condition.
