Fans of John Travolta are by now used to seeing him sporting a weave to cover up his ever-present Male Pattern Baldness. So some may have been shocked by recent pictures which revealed the full extent of his balding scalp.
First, at the beginning of September, the veteran star of films such as Saturday Night Fever, Grease and Pulp Fiction was pictured on the set of upcoming Oliver Stone film, Savages, sporting his natural look sans hairpiece. In the pictures, Travolta appears to be exhibiting a classic pattern of hair loss.
It is certainly a far cry from the lustrous locks he has been seen with in recent years, thanks to a variety of weaves and hairpieces. But it is certainly not unusual for a man of his 57 years to suffer from this extent of Male Pattern Baldness. Also known as Androgenetic Alopecia, this type of hair loss is an entirely natural process, and it has been estimated that around half of all men in the UK will succumb to the condition by their 50th birthday.
Travolta shows off hair loss more regularly
This rare glimpse of Travolta’s true hair was followed up less than a month later, when he was pictured without his hairpiece while playing tennis with friends. These public outings with his natural hair may suggest that the actor is becoming more comfortable with his hair loss as he gets older. He was pictured earlier this year without his wig while celebrating his 57th birthday in Hawaii with wife Kelly Preston and his daughter Ella.
It may also be that he has in fact been comfortable with it all along and that his adoption of hair pieces in recent years is merely a shrewd move by someone working in an industry where looks and youth are everything.
The more frequent appearance of his natural hair also coincides with the soon to be made biopic film Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father, in which Travolta will play the infamous balding mob boss John Gotti, head of the Gambino crime family. The casting suggests that Travolta may yet embrace his advancing years, and all that comes with them.
It’s not the first bald movie role he has taken either. In 2010’s From Paris with Love, he shaved his head for his role as Charlie Wax – a bald goateed FBI agent.
The hairpiece returns
But if his fans were wondering if Travolta’s weave was to become a thing of past, they got their answer just a day later when he was pictured wearing the hairpiece at a press conference in Los Angeles to promote Bombardier aircraft, for whom he is a brand ambassador. In addition to the weave Travolta, who himself is a pilot, wore a stylish, and undoubtedly expensive, leather bomber jacket.
So it seems the one-time T-Bird favours wearing the wig on-screen and for public appearances but prefers to go natural when enjoying time with family and friends (paparazzi intrusions notwithstanding). It may well be that he is not as physically comfortable when wearing the weave as he appears.
What other options are there for Travolta?
Of course if Mr Travolta wanted a more permanent solution that would remove the need for a hairpiece, there are options available to him.
