Is £2 Coin-Size Bald Patch from Over-Washing My Hair?'

Question: I am starting to get a bald patch about size of a 2 pound coin just at the side of my head just above my ear as I have shoulder length hair I can disguise it but for how long what if it spreads and the patch gets bigger . I do have very fine hair so have to wash every day is over washing causing this.

Answer: Hi, Michelle. From what you describe this patch of hair loss is highly unlikely to be related to how often you wash your hair.

The small, rounded balding area above your ear sounds like a classic symptom of the autoimmune condition Alopecia Areata. This is nothing to worry about and is the second most common cause of shedding in the world after male and female hair loss.

Sometimes it will spread with other patches appearing anywhere on the scalp, and/or the original patch may get bigger, however, it may equally stay in just that one area, as it is now.
