Question: Hi,I’m 18 years old and my hair has been slowly thinning since i was 16, i have a thin crown and a thin receding hairline,i am realy paranoid about going bald and im wondering what would be the best solution for me since its too early for a hair transplant,i keep my hair short and fade the sides so its not that noticeable i also been using alpecin shampoo and liquid for 5months now and havent seen hardly any improvement.
Answer: Hi Omar. These sound like classic signs of male pattern hair loss.
It’s a common misconception but Alpecin shampoo and liquid are not actually hair loss treatments. There are only two products licensed by the MHRA and FDA that are clinically-proven to treat genetic hair loss – these are finasteride 1mg and minoxidil. These components form the cornerstone of most comprehensive male hair loss treatment programmes but can be aided by complementary hair growth boosters. Continues below.
As you will see from the example pictured and our extensive Success Stories gallery, daily use of high strength minoxidil has produced particularly significant regrowth for many clients with a receding hairline. Minoxidil is applied topically to the areas where you are experiencing hair loss and is also suitable for addressing a thinning crown, or general thinning on the top of the head.
A fade hairstyle will definitely help to disguise thinning for now but this is a progressive condition so is likely to worsen over time, although the rate of hair loss can differ from person to person. Washing your hair regularly with a gentle shampoo suited to your hair type can make the hair appear thicker in the meantime, although – again – this is only a cosmetic solution to the problem of hereditary hair loss.
In order to assess your specific stage of hair loss and suitability for treatment, we would recommend you either visit a hair loss specialist in person, or use our Online Consultation form if you cannot visit one of our Central London clinics.
At 18, you are too young to consider a hair transplant – top surgeons recommend men should be no younger than 30 before considering this type of surgery. However, you may be interested to know that it is always advisable for anyone preparing to undergo a hair restoration procedure to first follow a hair loss treatment course for at least six months. This helps to stabilise hair loss and ensure the hair is in the best condition for the surgeon to work with. Also, some people find that they are happy with their treatment results and no longer want to go through with the operation!
