How to Use Hair Loss Products to Maximise Hair Growth
When you look in the mirror and notice the first signs of thinning hair or hair loss, it can be tempting to rush out and buy the first product you can lay your hands. But just as fast food rarely meets all of your nutritional needs in the same way that a meal made with good quality ingredients does, so too many products out there simply won’t give your hair the helps it needs. So why not spend some time to find out how hair loss products are different and which ones will work for you.
Minoxidil
One of only two products (the other is Propecia) that is proven to prevent hair loss and can be used by men and women, Minoxidil is a vasodilator which means it increases the blood circulation to the areas it is applied. Minoxidil can be prepared as a liquid or a cream and is applied to the scalp once or twice a day. Following a large-scale clinical trial by a US pharmaceutical company, Minoxidil was licensed for the prevention of hair loss in the UK by the MHRA and FDA-approved in the USA. The results of the trial showed that 65% of male users maintained or increased their hair count and 2 out of 3 women regrew hair.
Choosing the Minoxidil That Works for You
Minoxidil often appears in various hair loss products in a 2% concentration however there have been studies to show that a higher strength yields significantly better results. The Belgravia Centre has an in-house pharmacy that produces Minoxidil in a 4% or 5% solution with added Medroxyprogesterone (MPG) and an extra-strength 12.5% cream with added Azelaic Acid (AA). By adding MPG and AA, which are hair growth boosters, these prescriptive treatments may help improve the efficacy of the Minoxidil by countering the effects of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that causes Male Pattern Baldness and Female Pattern Hair Loss. Belgravia’s pharmacists take the greatest care to prepare Minoxidil of the highest quality and this is an important part of what makes Belgravia’s treatment programmes so effective.
Propecia (men only)
The single most effective treatment for male hair loss, Propecia has an active ingredient called Finasteride which was used to prevent Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH). Finasteride was shown to slow the formation of DHT which is known to contribute to Prostate Cancer. Propecia comes in a tablet form that is to be taken once daily. In a two year study of 1553 men with mild to moderate hair loss, of those using Propecia, over 83% had maintained or increased their hair count from baseline. In a five year study of 279 men, 90% achieved visible results: 48% experienced regrowth and 42% stopped losing hair. Nearly 70% regrew hair as measured by hair count. All of the men in the study who were not taking Propecia continued to lose hair.
Getting the Best Out of Propecia
To achieve optimum regrowth, it is recommended to use Propecia in conjunction with a prescriptive Minoxidil formula (see above) and the correct hair growth booster. This ensures the treatment is individualised to suit the person’s specific stage and type of hair loss and therefore bring about the best results.
Hair Growth Boosters
The majority of Belgravia’s tailored treatment courses will include a suitable hair growth booster product. These are not stand-alone hair loss solutions but they have been shown to improve the efficacy of treatment when administered correctly with proven products Minoxidil and Propecia. As well as the Minoxidil boosters MPG and AA, Belgravia offers the HairMax LaserComb and a nutrional supplement called Hair Vitalics.
Finding the Best Treatment
The first step is to get a diagnosis of the hair loss condition. Belgravia has a team of experts who will be able to assess the condition and recommend treatment. To book a consultation with one of Belgravia’s specialists, just call 020 7730 6666 or message the centre. Appointments are free of charge and available 7 days a week. If you are unable to visit the centre you can submit the online diagnostic form for a consultation via the website and a mail order treatment service.
