How To Treat a Receding Hairline

A Receding Hairline Can Be The First Sign of Male Pattern Baldness.A ‘widow’s peak’ is when the hairline at the front of the scalp forms a ‘V’ shape. While this is more often seen in men, it can affect women also. Sometimes a widow’s peak is just how your hair grows, but if the outline becomes more distinctive, and is accompanied by thinning hair on the top of the crown, it is often the early sign of male pattern baldness. While many men worry at this obvious change to their appearance, it is the best time to take action to prevent hair loss. There are only two treatments, Minoxidil and Propecia, that have shown sufficient evidence that they can effectively and safely tackle male pattern baldness.

Minoxidil
The exact mechanism by which Minoxidil makes hair grow is unknown however it is believed that it opens up the potassium channels which in turn allows more nutrient to reach the scalp resulting in hair growth. One study listed in the Dermatology Times says that “visible, photographically evident improvements were seen in the frontal scalp regions of 51 percent of men using 5 percent minoxidil, 42 percent using 2 percent minoxidil, and 13 percent of placebo users.” The pharmacy at the Belgravia Centre prepares Minoxidil in a 4% and 5% solution with added Medroxyprogesterone (MPG). MPG is a product that is unlicensed but may prevent Dihydrotestosterone (DHT – the hormone that causes genetic hair loss) from destroying the hair cells. In doing so, MPG supports Minoxidil by increasing its effectiveness.

Belgravia’s pharmacy also prepares a unique extra-strength Minoxidil 12.5% cream with added Azelaic Acid (AA). This can be prescribed for particuarly stubborn areas of hair loss, such as the widow’s peak.

Propecia
Available only to men, Propecia is a tablet that is taken once daily. It is the single most effective treatment for hair loss in men. If a man seeks treatment early enough, Propecia can prevent baldness. Propecia has shown in large scale clinical trials to work best at maintaining and restoring hair on the frontal and crown areas of the scalp. There is some debate as to its effectiveness for a receding hairline. However, when combined with Minoxidil as part of a tailored treatment programme, Propecia produces optimum regrowth.
