Homer Simpson’s Hair Loss

homer simpson bald head hair lossHe’s one of the most well known cartoon characters of all time, but Homer Simpson isn’t exactly known for his bouffant hair style (which is left up to his wife Marge to carry off in spectacular fashion). However, the final nail in the coffin for Homer’s hair happens in the latest episode of the Simpsons, which sees the absent minded patriarch experience hair loss after the disappearance of his famous two strand comb-over.

The development causes the hapless character to question whether his long suffering wife will still want him now that his hair loss is complete. However, when Marge declares that she will love him no matter what, his two strands of hair rather improbably spring back into place out of nowhere, as Marge mutters “Thank God” to the audience.

Famous Follicles

Now, one of the attractions of the longest running American sitcom is its departures from reality, and Homer’s hair leaping back into place is one such situation. That said, Homer’s hair loss will be a  familiar worry to many of the men who watch him on screen. So, on behalf of the Simpsons fans who will experience hair loss along with Homer, what can be done about male pattern hair loss?

Sadly, unless you have a cartoonist waiting to recreate your hair, once the follicles atop your head have ceased grow hair there’s no way to medically treat your hair loss. So, chances of regrowing a shiny, bald pate Homer-style is are slim to none, but providing that you have some manner of hair still growing (even if it’s wispy and weak) a hair loss treatment plan can help to halt the rate of loss and regrow hair.

Should Homer wish to treat his baldness, his best chance of doing so would involve a plan that incorporated the only two medications licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA (the UK and US medical regulatory bodies). The first of these two medications, Propecia, works by blocking DHT, the androgen hormone that causes follicles atop the scalp to shrink and produce weaker hair.

Once DHT has been blocked, scalp follicles should begin to recover, although a second medication, minoxidil, can help to stimulate the follicles to grow new, healthy hair. The two medications are highly complementary when used together, and whilst Propecia comes in a set daily dose regardless of how severe your hair loss is, minoxidil can be varied in strength up to our high strength 12.5% minoxidil cream.

As well as deciding on your ideal minoxidil strength, a hair loss specialist can also combine this medication with certain added ingredients which appear to block DHT when applied locally, therefore ensuring that hair loss is tackled from all available angles.

Once your hair loss has been diagnosed and a hair loss treatment plan has been drawn up (both of which can be done during a free consultation at either of our London clinics) patients can begin their course of medication combined with certain hair growth boosters to ensure all round hair health. As treatment progresses, check-ups ensure that everything is going well, and photos are taken to chart the individual’s progress.

Those who are able to visit our clinics can also enjoy a relaxing clinical treatment therapy, designed to stimulate deep into the scalp to encourage growth. However, we know that not all of our patients are able to visit London, so after completing an online diagnostic form, treatment plans can be posted out to wherever in the world you are.
