Hairloss treatments… what’s the best you can get?

For those that don’t like to leave anything to chance, here’s details of the best possible treatment combination in the fight against hair loss and thinning hair. Using this regime regularly will almost guarantee that your hair loss is halted, but will also ensure the highest chances of restoring those shrunken follicles to their natural thickness.

In November 2008 the Belgravia Centre recorded its first set of video diaries from a patient using a specialised Belgravia combination treatment course - we believe his results to be the best for hair loss ever recorded on video - you can view his videos here - HAIR LOSS VIDEO DIARY.

Most people’s hairloss is caused by a genetic condition, which you can blame your parents and grandparents for. There’s an androgen (hormone) in the body called DHT, that causes hair loss in some people - usually men, but women can also be affected. Around 50% of people are affected by this hormone and the effects result in the classic hair loss pattern - confined to the top of your head. There are a number of ways to prevent genetic hair loss - here they are…

Propecia
Propecia can be used by men only and its purpose is to block that hormone that causes hair loss - DHT. Luckily DHT doesn’t have any important purposes in the body after adolescence… other than destroying your hair follicles! So it’s ok to block it as long as you’re over 18 and do it carefully, with the right medical support.

Propecia is one of two medically proven products for hair loss and thinning hair - the only treatments that have been proven beyond doubt to prevent and reverse hair loss. But it’s a prescription medication so it’s not available everywhere.

Here’s the other proven hair loss product…

Minoxidil
Minoxidil is a solution applied topically and can be used by both men and women. The great thing about Minoxidil is that it works in a different way to Propecia, so using both targets hair loss from two completely different angles making hair re-growth rates even higher. And for women there are one or two substitutes to Propecia that you can use - I’ll go into more detail about these soon.

Minoxidil is what’s called a vasodilator - it opens up the capillaries at the areas of application, increasing blood supply and thus improving delivery of nutrients to the hair follicles when applied to the scalp. But don’t think you can just go and buy any similar ‘vasodilator’ product - there are many different forms of this drug type out there but minoxidil is the only one that’s been found to reverse the process of hair loss whereas others have not - nobody’s sure exactly why!

Minoxidil is a dose-dependent product, meaning it’s more effective in higher doses. We advise 4% as the minimum dose but minoxidil is available as a 4% or 5% solution or a 12.5% cream. Belgravia’s 12.5% minoxidil cream is designed for stubborn areas of hair loss such as the hair-line or crown whereas minoxidil 4% or 5% liquid is more effective in treating diffusely-spread thinning hair.

Minoxidil additives - DHT Blockers (MPG and Azelaic Acid)
Minoxidil is more effective if it contains a DHT blocker - this will ensure that the blood being delivered to the hair follicles is ‘hair friendly’ and contains as little of the hair destroying hormone as possible. In the case of women, who are unable to take Propecia this is especially useful but in the case of men, a DHT blocker ensures any excess DHT that has not been caught by Propecia is dealt with.

HairMax LaserComb

LaserCombThe HairMax LaserComb is the only device proven to assist hair loss prevention in men. It’s a great booster to use alongside the other proven treatments and maximise their effectiveness. The Belgravia Centre is the only clinic to offer the Hair Max Laser Comb free with most treatment courses for thinning hair. Its usual price is £245 for the Compact device or £325 for the Premium version.

The comb consists of low-power laser beams that penetrate the scalp and energise the cells within the hair follicles in order to boost cell division and hair growth.

Hair Vitalics Healthy Hair Supplement
Hair Vitalics
Hair Vitalics is Belgravia’s own hair supplement. It contains various vitamins and nutrients known to assist in healthy hair growth. Along with the LaserComb, this is the ideal booster for any hair loss prevention programme to ensure the hair grows to its maximum potential.

As with other similar hair loss supplements such as Provillus and Procerin, we do not recommend Hair Vitalics as an individual solution to prevent thinning hair, simply because none of these products will work to the same degree as the proven treatments.

Used and combined correctly, the optimum hair loss treatment programme will almost always ensure no more hair is shed, and in most cases hair density will increase. But it’s important that when dealing with prescription medications that the treatment programme is fine-tuned for each individual and progress is monitored by a specialist.
