Hair Restoration: How Does It Work?

man bald hair restoration When you realise that your hair is beginning to thin, it’s easy to ignore the problem and try to pretend that it’s not happening. Many of our clients come to us when ignoring is no longer an option, and when they are really worried about potentially needing a hair transplant (nearly always unnecessary). Many men also find that their hair loss has been a blow to their confidence, and their home, social and work life has suffered as a result.

Why You’re Going Bald…

The key to restoring your hair lies in understand why you’re losing it in the first place. Affecting 95% of men who experience hair loss, male pattern baldness can occur at any point after puberty, though it gets increasingly likely as you age. Characterised by a thinning of the crown, and/or a receding hair line, if you’re noticing this type of hair loss with no other symptoms, it’s very likely that you are experiencing male pattern baldness, or, to give it it’s scientific term, androgenic alopecia.

‘Androgenic’ comes from the term androgen, which is a male sex hormone. Hair loss commonly occurs when testosterone joins with enzyme 5-alpha reductase to form androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT attacks genetically predisposed hair follicles on the top of a man’s scalp, causing them to shrink and produce weaker hairs, and eventually no hairs at all. The genetic predisposition occurs when we inherit certain genes from our family tree, that is, our parents could both have full heads of hair into their 80’s, but we could inherit the predisposition to baldness from a grandparent on either side of the family.

…And How To Restore The Lost Hair

Genetics cannot, at the moment at least, be altered to remove this disposition, so we restore hair lost due to male pattern balding by focusing our attention on the aspects of androgenic alopecia which we can affect . Our first way of doing this is to block that androgen, DHT, in order to prevent it doing further damage. Propecia, an oral medication taken once a day, blocks DHT effectively, and as DHT has no useful function in the body after puberty, there is no issue with dealing with it in this way.

Blocking DHT should stabilise your rate of loss, but scalp hair follicles will generally need a helping hand to recover enough to produce strong and healthy hair. To do this, we use minoxidil, which like Propecia is a clinically proven hair loss treatment licensed by the MHRA and the FDA medical regulatory bodies. The actual mechanics of how minoxidil works is still a bit of a mystery, though we think it probably has something to do with the fact that it opens up potassium channels in the scalp. Minoxidil, regardless of how it works, definitely helps regrow hair in thinning areas for many people.

The Bigger Picture

The Belgravia Centre generally finds that using this dual-pronged approach as the basis for our hair loss treatment plans is a highly effective means to restore hair in a relatively fast way; a free consultation with a hair loss specialist can quickly establish the cause of your baldness, and the best method of restoring it. When combined with out treatment boosters, each client is given the best possible chance of halting hair loss and restoring a head of healthy, strong hair. Of course, we can’t guarantee that it works for everyone, although success rates are very reassuring, but check out our success stories to hear the feedback from happy patients who have restored their hair without the need for a hair transplant.
