As with any medication, it’s important to ensure that you’re taking the right amount of the two clinically proven treatments in your Belgravia hair loss programme. Failure to keep up your treatment routine, or taking too much or too little of the medications, can cause problems. Your hair loss specialist will go through your programme with you in depth before you begin it, and they’re always happy to answer any questions you may have before or during your course. Below, we explore how the different medications work and why dosage is important.
The medications that we provide as part of Belgravia’s bespoke treatment plans have been licensed by the FDA and approved by the MHRA, which means that the UK and US medical regulatory bodies have approved them for use for the purpose of treating hair loss.
The first of two proven hair loss medications, Propecia, works by blocking DHT, the androgen that causes scalp follicles atop the head to shrink. The shrinkage means that weaker, wispy hair is produced. If left untreated over a period of time, hair will cease to be produced at all. It is therefore imperative that thinning hair is treated before this stage is reached. Propecia (the most common brand name for finasteride 1mg) comes in a standard daily dose of 1mg for the treatment of male pattern hair loss.
A stronger dose of 5mg can be used to help prevent Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH), but increasing the dose above 1mg as a hair loss treatment doesn’t make Propecia more effective. As such, 1mg taken daily is the only dosage prescribed, regardless of what level your hair loss is at.
Minoxidil, the second proven hair loss medication, appears to stimulate new hair growth in the damaged hair follicles that DHT has harmed. The exact mechanism that causes minoxidil to do this is still unknown (though it may have something to do with potassium channels in the scalp) but clinical trials and medical testing have shown that minoxidil is effective as a hair loss treatment.
Unlike Propecia, minoxidil is dose dependent, which means that the stronger the dose (within reason), the more effective the medication can be and the more stubborn a case of hair loss it can treat. High strength minoxidil has proven to be particularly effective at treating difficult cases of hair loss, providing that there is still some degree of growth in the thinning area.
As well as varying the dosage of minoxidil (which can differ from one case of pattern hair loss to the next based on the fact that it can be applied twice a day in various strengths) certain added ingredients can combined with the medication to potentially enhance its effectiveness. Azelaic Acid, Medroxyprogesterone and caffeine all appear to block DHT when applied locally, so depending on your individual needs, a unique minoxidil formulation can be compiled for you.
Of course, unless you’re a hair loss specialist, you won’t be able to choose your ideal dosage: it is always best to consult an expert to ensure that you’re using not only the best dose of medication, but the best all round hair loss treatment plan for your type and extent of hair loss. At Belgravia, medications are combined with a variety of hair growth boosters recommended by your dedicated specialist; all this ensures that you have the best chance possible of halting hair loss and regrowing thinning hair.
