Q&A: Hair Loss After a Sex Change Operation – Can Treatments Help?

Name: Shahin

Question: When I was a girl I started to lose hair and then after I had my sex changed from female to male, I have lost front (hair) totally. What can I do to regain my hair? I have seen a programme a few years ago that they have found a solution to re-grow the human hair again. Thank you.

Hair Loss in Transwomen & Transmen Can Be Successfully TreatedAnswer: This is a very interesting case because it is more common for hair loss clients who have undergone Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS) to be transwomen (ie. they have changed from male to female) rather than transmen (female to male).

As a transman, you will be undergoing Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to develop your male characteristics. The good news is that it is easier for transmen to produce male bodily functions than it is for transwomen to lose them. However, one outcome of transmen taking HRT (or testosterone) is that, while it will increase facial and body hair, it can also make you prone to male pattern baldness. This cannot be conclusively diagnosed without a consultation as the sex-change procedure could have been the cause of a number of other forms of hairloss.

For men, there are a range of treatment options available including proven hair loss treatments Minoxidil and Propecia but I would suggest that you visit the clinic for a consultation so that we can conclusively diagnose your condition and explore which treatment method is right for you. For instance, at the Belgravia Centre, Minoxidil is prepared in three different strengths: 4%, 5% and 12.5% and it is important to seek professional advice to get the safest and most effective results. Propecia, while suitable for men, is not safe for women and men should stop using one week before conception to guarantee the safety of foetal production. Supplementary hair growth boosters may also be recommended to create a unique program of treatment that will most suit you.

If you have undergone SRS (also known as gender reassignment surgery) and you suffer from hair thinning or hair loss, we are happy to offer a free consultation which will give us the opportunity to recommend the most effective course of treatment for your individual case. Please contact us on 020 7730 6666 or message the clinic. Alternatively, you can complete an online diagnostic form and a hair specialist will be in touch.
