Hair loss affects men and women throughout the world, and as far back as the days of ancient civilisations people have sought potions, elixirs and treatments to reverse the process. This universal nature of hair loss was emphasised recently by an event that one expert described as “the Western world’s largest-ever conference on hair research.”
Taking place in Israel’s capital city, Jerusalem, the 15th Annual Meeting of the European Hair Research Society (EHRS) saw roughly 400 scientists from around the world descend upon the Ramada Jerusalem Hotel between 6th and 9th of July to discuss hair loss conditions and treatments.
An international effort to tackle hair loss
Despite the ‘European’ part of the title, the Jerusalem Post reported that attendees came from at least thirty countries around the world, including the UK, US, China, India, South Korea, France and Australia. The conference takes place in a different country each year, with this being the first time it has been held in Israel.
The event was chaired by Professor Abraham Zlotogorski, who is the director of Hadassah University Medical Centre’s hair clinic. Prof. Zlotogorski told the Jerusalem Post: “The past two decades have seen a turning point for hair research, from a subject dealt with only in hair salons and pharmacies to a leading subject in medicine.”
He enthused that the scale of the event illustrated the progress that has been made in the field. “Research goes into such detail that it touches molecular biology,” he told the newspaper, adding, “Hair is one of the most fascinating organs in the body. There are few organs that undergo such renewal, with cells dying and then growing again.”
Discussions and presentations at the conference centred around all aspects of hair loss and hair health, including the anatomy of hair, pharmaceutical methods of treating hair loss, the genetic factors of hair loss, and specific conditions such as Alopecia Areata and Male Pattern Baldness.
