A campaign is underway to persuade Argentina’s Lionel Messi to get a lucky perm in the style of Diego Maradona circa 1986 when the team won the World Cup. Messi, who plays for Barcelona, and is expected to be named FIFA’s world player of the year next month, is worrying Argentinian fans with his below-par performance of late.
So the fans have come up with a solution – a Maradona perm. A Facebook campaign is leading the way, with over 10,000 supporters calling for Messi to grow some curls in time for next summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa. The campaigners argue that the aerodynamics offered by a perm give players perfect grip on the pitch, complementing a player’s balance and skill and use not only Maradona as their mascot but also Colombia stars Rene Higuita and Carlos Valderrama. The facebook site carries a humorous testimonial from ‘Rogelio’, who claims to have been Maradona’s barber in 1985. Rogelio claims ‘El Diez’ came to him looking for straight hair, only to be talked into going for the curlers. ‘I feel part of the goal against the English,’ says Rogelio, in reference to the quarter-final at Mexico in 1986 when Maradona scored with his legendary ’Hand of God’ moment. This controversial first goal was countered with Maradona’s second goal of the match which was voted by FIFA as the greatest goal in the history of the World Cup.
While Messi, 22, has a good crop of hair and may be able to take up the perm challenge, many men in their 20s are not so fortunate. Hair loss is a common condition affecting men of all ages. By the age of 35 over 40% suffer from Male Pattern Baldness, or genetic hair loss. The first signs are usually a receding hairline and thinning hair on the crown. The condition is a result of a hormone called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which attacks the hair follicles.
For men who want to retain their hair, it is possible to treat this condition. Following successful clinical trials, there are two products that have been given thumbs up from the medical regulatory bodies in the UK and USA. Minoxidil and Propecia are used by millions of men worldwide. The level of re-growth men experience depends on a few factors. An early diagnosis is important as is a treatment programme tailored to suit the individual.
