Minoxidil is a medication that is licensed by the MHRA (the UK’s medical regulatory body) to treat genetic forms of hair loss (Male Pattern Hair Loss and Female Pattern Hair Loss). Following a large-scale clinical study, a 5% dose of the product was found to prevent hair loss in most cases and regrow hair for many of those people. A little while ago we reported that Declan Donnelly – Dec, of Ant and Dec fame – had been rumoured to have had a hair transplant or some other form of hair loss treatment.

Now, a source close to the star has come forward to put the record straight on the popular presenter’s hair loss and apparent re-growth.

At the end of January, the unnamed source told The Sun that, “Declan has certainly not had a transplant.” Some in the media, The Sun included, have speculated in the past that Dec’s changing hairline might have been the result of a surgical procedure, though this was based entirely on speculation.

According to The Sun, Dec had, “set tongues wagging by appearing at the National Television Awards on Wednesday night with a luxuriant head of hair – a far cry from his previous thinning mop.

The source went on to say that, “He knows his hairline is receding and has taken some steps to tackle it. There are all sorts of remedies out there you can get, including tablets and shampoos. He’s not exactly kept it a secret. He was even joking about it at the NTAs (National Television Awards) as people he hadn’t seen for a while had noticed the change.”

The source does not appear to have gone on record saying that Dec is definitely taking the aforementioned tablets and shampoos, but according to The Sun, “He is understood to have opted for a mix of special one-a-day tablets of hair growth chemical and shampoo… one tablet he is likely to have started taking is Propecia.”

What is Propecia and how does it work?

Propecia is one of only two pharmaceutical treatments which have been scientifically proven to actively stabilise and reverse hair loss due to Male Pattern Baldness. It works by inhibiting formation of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase in the body, which in turn prevents the formation of the natural chemical Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is this DHT which is responsible for the shrinking of hair follicles to an almost microscopic level, thus leading to the appearance of hair loss. By reducing levels of DHT in the body, Propecia can effectively keep Male Pattern Baldness at bay, and give it a chance to re-grow.

If Declan Donnelly is indeed using Propecia to treat his hair loss condition, then he should be reassured by the fact that it has been licensed for this purpose by the Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency(MHRA) here in the UK, and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The only other pharmaceutical treatment to receive this recognition is Minoxidil.

For many people, Propecia, and Minoxidil, are a far better way of dealing with hair loss due to Male Pattern Baldness than having and expensive hair transplant. Hair Transplants can also be risky, as they are a form of invasive surgery, and what’s more, no guarantees are provided that they will work, despite their often £6,000+ price tag. In fact Propecia is often given to people after they have had a hair transplant.

It’s likely that Dec is taking Propecia as part of a comprehensive treatment programme which includes a variety of complementary hair loss treatments. This would involve first a diagnosis, to assess and evaluate the state of the hair loss, followed by the recommendation of a number of treatments.

The new advert for Honda’s CR-V sees him reprise the role with tongue firmly in cheek, but for anyone who has failed to see any of his films since Ferris, the most notable thing about the commercial may be Broderick’s balding and receding hairline.

The advert was screened at this year’s Super Bowl – a big day for both American Football and commercials on the other side of the pond. It begins with Broderick feigning illness to his agent before embarking on a series of homages to the film, which has since achieved the status of a minor classic. During a recent interview with the Daily Star newspaper, footballer and global superstar David Beckham confessed that he fears going bald in the future. When asked about whether he had undergone a hair transplant, or would consider one in future, he said, “Someone said I’d had a hair transplant. There’s definitely nothing wrong with doing that, but I don’t think personally I would. If I do start showing signs of going bald, then I will shave it off. I’ve still got hair. I’m still fighting it.”

Many of Beckham’s fears about hair loss seem to stem from the fact that his father Ted went bald, and genetically he too stands to experience a receding hairline or thinning hair as a result. Yet despite the popularity of hair transplant operations, such as that undergone by fellow England footballer Wayne Rooney, Beckham has already ruled them out.

However, because David Beckham is aware that his family has a predisposition to male pattern balding he can take proactive steps to retain his healthy hair before the he noticeably loses any at all.

Famed for her no-compromise approach to cooking, Nigella Lawson is as famous for her curves and long, glossy hair as she is for the dishes she creates. However passersby will have been surprised to note clear signs of thinning at the back of her head, around the crown.

Is the Hair Loss Caused by Her Diet Plan?

Hair loss specialists have long known that certain diets can lead to thinning hair if not monitored carefully. Hair health is entirely dependent on a constant supply of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Should the supply of nutrients be disrupted or stopped, a person’s hair will immediately lose its body and shine, becoming brittle and prone to breakage. If the hair follicles which pass minerals to the hair are deprived for long enough, the attached hair can eventually fall out altogether.

So called ‘fad’ diets are often blamed by hair loss experts for causing hair loss in men and women because they can fail to maintain intake of the nutrients essential for healthy hair. Any diet which reduces a person’s levels of vitamins A, B or C, folic acid or iron all have the potential to cause hair loss.

Nigella Lawson is particularly famous for creating dishes which emphasise rich flavours, regardless of the calorie and fat content. It is therefore entirely possible that the change in her diet has led to a corresponding shift in her vitamin and mineral intake. Nigella’s transformation has been relatively speedy, suggesting that she is on some form of extreme diet coupled with a physically grueling exercise regime. It is no stretch of the imagination to think that there is a correlation between her weight and apparent hair loss.

Could it be Stress-Related Hair Loss?

Stress is also known to be a common cause of hair loss in men and women, which often manifests in a condition known as Telogen Effluvium. Taking up to three months for the associated hair loss to begin, Telogen Effluvium can be caused by all manner of stressful situations which cause a hormonal imbalance.

Telogen Effluvium causes a person’s hair follicles to enter a ‘resting’ phase prematurely so that the attached hair stops growing. Once hair follicle enters telogen, the hair falls out. People experiencing Telogen Effluvium are often shocked by the unexpected hair loss which begins around three months after the stressful event which triggers the condition.

Perhaps somewhat unexpected is the fact that dieting and stress can be closely related, with some food regimes causing dieters to become extremely stressed. Three months ago Nigella Lawson was in the middle of her weight loss efforts potentially causing a great deal of emotional stress. Her admission of being an ‘aquaholic’, whereby she needed to drink upwards of eight litres of water every day, would also have been causing significant physical stress on her metabolism.

As a result it is entirely feasible that stress may well have had some part to play in the condition of Nigella’s apparent hair loss this week.

What About Excessive Exercise?

Although exercise is essential for staying healthy, certain routines may be harmful to the hair of women genetically predisposed to hair loss through a condition known as Androgenic Alopecia. Certain exercises increase production of testosterone which is then broken down into a secondary chemical which attacks the hair follicles. The hair in these follicles then falls out, leading to bald patches, typically around the crown as demonstrated by Nigella.

Ms Lawson has spoken openly about her strenuous exercise regime in conjunction with her diet, which involves intense, 20-minute cardio workouts. It is probable that these frequent, intense workouts are raising her testosterone levels, thereby increasing the risk of hair loss through Androgenic Alopecia if she is inclined that way genetically.

What Can She Do?

Fortunately For Nigella, the photographs taken during the week suggest that her hair loss is in the early stages, apparently restricted to the crown of her head present. Better still, should the thinning hair be caused by Telogen Effluvium, the hair should regrow naturally within three to six months.

However, without a definitive diagnosis, Ms Lawson cannot be sure whether her hair loss is caused by Telogen Effluvium, or something more long-term, like female pattern hair loss. Obviously Nigella’s first course of action should be to obtain professional advice from a reputable hair loss expert who will be able to identify what is causing the hair loss, and formulate a treatment plan to help prevent further shedding.

With a proper diagnosis in place, and a personalised hair loss treatment plan underway, Nigella Lawson should find that her hair loss stabilises and eventually reverses. This will usually be achieved through a combination of medications and complementary therapies designed to stimulate and deliver nutrients to the hair follicles.
