Eyebrow Transplant Uses Scalp Hair

eyebrow drawing onA woman who experienced hair loss in her eyebrows due to the condition trichotillomania has successfully had an eyebrow transplant using scalp hair to replace the eyebrow hairs that she pulled out. The compulsive disorder causes sufferers to twist and pull out hair from various places on the scalp or face, and can lead to medically untreatable hair loss.

Eyebrow Raising Treatment

Trichotillomania sufferers may often not realise that they’re tugging their hair out, as the action is often an unconscious one. Once a bald area has been made, the compulsion often becomes even harder to resist, and over time if hairs are constantly being pulled out, the follicles themselves can become damaged and can cease to produce hairs.

In this particular case, the Daily Mail reports that the woman in question pulled out her eyebrow hair from the age of six to 15, enough time to permanently damage the hair follicle. In order to provide new eyebrows for the patient, a surgeon transplanted hair from the back of her head to her eyebrows.

This procedure is not dissimilar to the method of transplanting hair for a scalp hair transplant, where healthy hair from the sides or back of the head, an area unaffected by male pattern hair loss, is moved to the top and front of the scalp to offer a solution to hair loss that is no longer medically treatable.

At Belgravia, we don’t treat eyelash or eyebrow hair loss, but we can treat hair loss of the scalp including some cases of trichotillomania, often preventing the need for a hair transplant in men and women who assumed that this was their only option. A medically proven hair loss treatment programme that contains at least one hair loss medication that has been licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA, the UK and the US medical regulatory bodies respectively, can achieve great results in terms of hair regrowth without the need for surgery.

For Scalp Hair

Both Propecia, an oral medication that blocks DHT, the androgen that causes pattern hair loss, and minoxidil, a topical liquid or 12.5% extra-strength minoxidil cream that stimulates growth in thinning areas are proven for hair loss, but whilst men can use both, women can only use minoxidil.

However, minoxidil can be varied in strength to cater to the individual patient, and various ingredients which appear to block DHT when applied locally, such as azelaic acid, can be combined with the formulation to give the patient the best chance possible of halting hair loss and regrowing hair. Alongside the medications, a number of hair growth boosters form a truly comprehensive approach that will ensure that hair is kept in the best condition possible.
