Question: I just wanted to enquire as to whether you deal with the treatment of hairloss for Afro Caribbean hair?
Answer: Hi, Geneve. Yes, many of our patients have afro hair and we have treated their hair loss successfully – you can find many examples here, in the ‘Afro Hair’ category of our Success Stories.
Whilst genetic hair loss (known as androgenic alopecia) is treated in the same way irregardless of race (although one of the two proven for hair loss medications, finasteride 1mg also known as Propecia, is only available for men) there are certain types of hair loss that are more prevalent in those with Afro Caribbean hair.
We often see black patients with traction alopecia that has occurred due to damaging hair styling techniques such as hair extensions, weaves, braids or other hairstyles that put pressure on the hair follicle. A treatment programme that includes high strength minoxidil can be effective in producing significant regrowth results for both men and women with afro hair loss.
Another condition that is particular to women with Afro Caribbean hair is follicular degeneration syndrome. This condition is characterised by thinning initially near the back of the head which then progresses towards the front. Providing hair follicles have not scarred, and subject to a consultation, Belgravia can treat this manner of hair loss, too.
The Belgravia Centre is the leader in hair loss treatment in the UK, with two clinics based in Central London.
