‘Do I Have to Wash My Hair After Each Minoxidil Application?’

HairlossANSWERS - Click to Submit Your Query to Our Hair Loss Experts

Name: Faddy

Man Washing HairQuestion: After applying minoxidil twice a day do we really need to shampoo every time after applying or we can shampoo once a week or twice a week?

Answer: Hi, Faddy. Not at all – it is not necessary to shampoo each time prior to applying minoxidil.

Washing your hair with a normal frequency is fine but it needs to be more than once per week and even twice a week may not be sufficient whilst you are using hair loss treatment if you have a Caucasian or Asian hair type. Afro hair can be washed less frequently as it has a different makeup which is better suited to washing around once per week.

This frequent cleansing is because you need to ensure you prevent a build up of minoxidil residue on the scalp. Without regular shampooing, this residue may build up and irritate the scalp or affect the absorption of subsequent minoxidil applications.

Shampooing every second day is often ideal to ensure your scalp remains clean although if you have an Afro hair type, perhaps try washing your hair once per week. Freshly washed hair also looks thicker so regular shampooing has the added benefit of creating the illusion of making thinning hair look fuller!

I have avoided using shampoo for the past 30 years, believing that the lathering contingent strips natural oil from the scalp causing more oil to be secreted. Instead, regularly rinsing with water and generally brushing through with a soft-to-medium shower brush helps to envigorate the scalp, encourage blood circulation and spread the natual scalp oil to cleanse the hair. You are very likely to find after 3 weeks that the greasiness disappears and the scalp and hair is free from any flakeyness.

Hi Metta, your minoxidil provider should give you instructions on usage and you should follow these as you are not a Belgravia client. We can, however, give you general advice. There is no need to wash or rinse your hair after applying minoxidil. You may find these Frequently Asked Questions About Using Minoxidil helpful.
