Speaking with The Daily Mail newspaper this week, former rugby star Kyran Bracken has discussed the less-than-perfect results of his hair transplant operation which has left him with patchy baldness similar to that for which he originally sought treatment. The 2007 Dancing on Ice star first noticed the signs of male pattern balding in his early twenties and, determined to avoid the thinning hairline to which his father succumbed, sought out a surgical solution.

Apart from experiencing normal scarring on the back of his scalp where the healthy hair was taken for transplantation, Bracken found that within a few weeks of the operation the new hair fell out. This is a relatively common side-effect of the procedure, and the newly transplanted hair follicles should resume normal growth shortly afterwards.

Twelve months later Bracken noticed another problem. The hair surrounding the newly implanted follicles had resumed thinning, creating new bald patches in the ‘old’ hair.

Bracken is not alone

Bracken is not alone in having on-going problems with hair loss following his transplant. Some patients report extreme reactions to the procedure where their hair goes into ‘shock’ and falls out. This shock can affect both the newly implanted hair and the remaining hairline, leaving the patient feeling even worse than before.

Leonora Doclis, one of The Belgravia Centre’s senior hair loss experts said: “Hair transplantation can do wonders particularly on a receding hair line but one must then regrowth treatments to retain the ‘old’ hair, around the transplant.”

Regarding Bracken, Doclis went on to say: “Perhaps Kyran did not use any preventative treatments, hence he noticed bald patches a few years after his transplant procedure. A number of hair loss treatments and hair growth boosters are highly successful in preventing further hair loss and in the majority of cases, stimulating hair regrowth.”

Preventative hair loss treatment without surgery

These hair loss treatments are also effective before undergoing surgery and in most cases can halt further shedding and promote regrowth. Combined with one of The Belgravia Centre’s unique, personalised treatment plans, many men and women experiencing pattern balding can regrow lost hair without having to submit to the surgeon’s knife.

Said Doclis: “Using treatment at the onset, or early stages of balding boosts your chance of regrowth. For this reason, it is often better to be proactive by treating hair loss earlier rather than letting hair loss reach an advanced stage.” The Belgravia Centre therefore advises men and women to seek professional advice as soon as they notice a receding hairline or thinning crown as Kyran Bracken did in his twenties.

“I would like to say that everyone was very friendly and helpful.  From the receptionist to Ms Daiva Valioniene, who was very kind and understanding, and to Ms Trinity Gardiner, who discussed my treatment and helped me make my choice. It was very nice feeling to know that I am not alone in this and that I do have support.. Looking forward to coming back.”

“Maria’s a nice specialist, I felt comfortable talking to her and she explained me well of my own problems.  Pam, she’s a lovely lady, helpful and more friendly. Even when I was about to leave the clinic, she came towards me and asked me how I felt during the treatment.  Reception greeted me once I opened the door, the clinic has so many caring staff members.”

“I was quite happy with the staff and the service at the Belgravia Centre.  Cisca Van Rensburg, she explained clearly my situation and answered all my questions and made me feel comfortable as I didn’t have any concerns after the examination.  Shamima was quite friendly.  I liked the way she discussed and described the treatment. I didn’t feel like a patient when I was talking to her I felt like I was talking to a friend.  Also, as she was having the same treatment she talked about her situation as well and gave me examples which was a really nice thing.  In reception there wasn’t any queue, I was welcomed by the staff as long as I stepped in. I filled a form quickly and didn’t wait much for the examination which is a quite good thing.  Generally, I was satisfied with the service at Belgravia Centre and I would definitely recommend to anyone who suffers from the same problem.”

“The Service received was great since I was greeted as soon as I walked through the door.  My preconceptions before I got to the centre was that it was going to be a top notch environment which made me feel slightly nervous. When I actually got there I found the centre to be top notch but modest at the same time which seemed to dilute those preconceptions.”

“I found all staff I encountered polite and professional and having walked in off the street was facilitated with an appointment straight away.  Likewise when I needed to change the time of my appointment the following day this was done immediately to suit my commitments.  A very good service.”

British Olympic Canoeing Hopeful Tim Brabants Reflects on Hair Loss

Posted on March 24th, 2012 by Chriss, under Hair Loss, Hair Loss News, Male Hair Loss | No Comments | Ask A Question

Tim Brabants Hair Loss The Belgravia CentreSprint canoeist Tim Brabants has represented Britain on the world sports stage since the year 2000, when he won a bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics.

Tim was interviewed by BBC Sport last week. As well as talking about his preparations for this Summer’s games in London, he reflected on what had changed in the last few years.  Many men will relate to Tim’s admission of some hair loss.

Tim stated: “I don’t feel any different on this return other than I’ve got a lot less hair than I did then. I’ve got a lot more experience and, because I’m a bit older, I’m probably a bit wiser too.”

Wisdom and experience does not mean hair loss is inevitable

Although a receding hair line or thinning crown is completely natural for some men as they get older, it is not an irreversible part of the process. Where Tim seems to feel that his experience goes hand-in-hand with his thinning hair, the experiences of the many hundreds of men and women treated at The Belgravia Centre clearly demonstrate that this is not the case.

The Belgravia Centre has the world’s largest online library of patient hair loss success stories that catalogues hundreds of cases of hair loss reversal with photos and feedback. Despite the ongoing progression of Tim Brabants’ receding hair line, our hair loss experts can often significantly reduce further shedding and promote regrowth.

Treating age-related hair loss

Although age and hair loss seem to go together naturally, in reality Male Pattern Balding is slightly more complicated. By the age of 50, men have a 50% chance of experiencing hair loss. By 60, the odds are raised to 60%, and so on with age roughly matching the likelihood of developing some form of receding hairline.

Androgenic Alopecia, to give the condition its proper name, is caused by a hormonal imbalance which converts testosterone into a chemical known as DHT, which attacks the hair follicles causing them to shrink and prevent new hair growth. A number of clinically proven medications mixed with hair growth boosters can halt hair loss and regrow hair in men like Tim Brabants who are affected by Androgenic Alopecia.

Turning conventional hair loss wisdom on its head

It is never too late to begin treatment to combat hair loss. Our experts recommend that men seek assistance as soon as possible, if only for the positive effect that this has on their confidence.

The Belgravia Centre wishes Tim Brabants every success as he continues with his effort to qualify for Team GB and we would happily welcome him to our Victoria-based clinic to discuss hair loss treatment at any time.  We also welcome any man or women experiencing hair loss, Olympian or otherwise, to contact us to book a free, no obligation consultation. You can call us on 0800 077 6666 or message us online to arrange this. However, you don’t need to live in London for The Belgravia Centre to help you: you can fill in our online diagnostic form for a customised treatment plan that we can send to you anywhere in the world.

Hope for a new baldness cure?

Posted on March 22nd, 2012 by Chriss, under Female Hair Loss, Hair Loss, Hair Loss News, Male Hair Loss | No Comments | Ask A Question

Hope for Hair Loss Cure The Belgravia CentreScientists have published details regarding a protein which triggers hair loss raising hopes of developing a new cure for baldness. Writing in the Science Translational Medicine journal, researchers claim to have identified a protein which triggers hair loss in mice. More importantly the same protein has been identified in balding men.

“Essentially we showed that prostaglandin protein was elevated in the bald scalp of men and that it inhibited hair growth. So we identified a target for treating male pattern baldness, “ said Professor George Cotsarelis who led the research. “The next step would be to screen for compounds that affect this receptor and to also find out whether blocking that receptor would reverse balding or just prevent balding – a question that would take a while to figure out.”

What about treating male pattern balding now?

Although the new research raises hopes for finding new treatments for male pattern balding and receding hair lines, such a cure is still some time off. So far Professor Cotsarelis’ team have been unable to identify a compound which successfully inhibits the action of the protein in question, and even if they do, clinical trials will take several years before obtaining government approval.

Male Pattern Hair Loss Reversed The Belgravia CentreFortunately there are already clinically approved medications and other effective hair loss treatments which are proven to have a very high success rate when treating Androgenic Alopecia in both men and women. Therefore there is no reason for men experiencing hair loss to await the final outcomes of Professor Cotsarelis’ research before seeking treatment.

Jason Donovan’s Hair Transplants Uncovered

Strictly comb dancing ... Jason Donovan's new head of hair, right, and before, left

The sudden regrowth of hair by Jason Donovan between the mid-1990s and his recent appearances on Strictly Come Dancing have always puzzled fans.

Many believed that the regrowth was as a result of overcoming his drink and drugs battles but Donovan has finally gone on record to admit he has undergone a similar hair transplant operation to that popularised by England footballer Wayne Rooney.

The hair transplant sees healthy hair and follicles taken from unaffected parts of a patient’s scalp before being grafted back on to areas of patchy baldness. Unfortunately hair transplant surgery is both extremely expensive (Rooney is alleged to have paid more than £30,000 for his treatment) and not guaranteed to have the desired regrowth effect.

Another way to reverse balding

Fortunately there are alternative hair loss treatments available which are not only clinically proven to reduce hair loss and promote natural regrowth, but are also far cheaper than surgery. The Belgravia Centre uses clinically proven medications to stimulate hair growth. We have many success stories from satisfied clients on our website – it’s the largest collection of its kind in the world and features ‘before and during treatment’ photos and comments from treatment users who have had exceptional results.

To find out how The Belgravia Centre can transform your hairline like Jason Donovan’s but without the cost of invasive surgery, give us a call on 0800 077 6666 or contact us online to book a free, no obligation consultation with one of our hair loss experts. Alternatively, filll in our online diagnostic form for an individual treatment programme that can be sent to you anywhere in the world.

Hair Loss Myth: Hats Cause Hair Loss

Posted on March 21st, 2012 by Chriss, under Hair Loss, Male Hair Loss | No Comments | Ask A Question

Hats and Hair Loss The Belgravia CentreOne question which comes up time and again here at The Belgravia Centre is ‘do hats cause hair loss?’ Men and women who are experiencing patchy hair loss often ask whether wearing a hat to cover bald spots will exacerbate the problem.

The good news is that our hair loss experts have been unable to find any conclusive evidence of hats causing, or increasing, the rate at which hair is shed.

The only possible way that wearing a hat could cause hair loss would be if it was extremely tight and it was worn frequently. This could potentially, place the hair follicles under enough tension to cause a form of hair loss known as Traction Alopecia.

What is Traction Alopecia?

A form of lifestyle-related hairloss, Traction Alopecia develops over time when hair is pulled extremely tightly, such as when placed in braids or cornrows. This  places the hair follicles under strain until they are eventually deformed and the attached hair falls out.

Hats off to the hair loss experts

For men and women undergoing hair loss treatment, wearing a hat of some kind makes perfect sense – as Jude Law, among others, has found. A hat  provides a way of masking patchy hair loss without compromising the health of existing hair. Because there is no proof of hat-wearing causing long term problems our hair loss experts are happy for clients to wear headgear with the proviso that it is not so tight-fitting as to place undue strain on the hair follicles.
