‘Can You Treat Teenagers With Hair Loss?’

Name: Felicity

Question: Can you treat hair loss in teenagers?

Answer: Hi, Felicity. Assuming they are medically suitable for treatment, we can treat teenagers who are 16 years old or above but it depends on their hair loss condition.

Can You Treat Hair Loss in Teenagers?Early onset genetic hair loss – male pattern baldness or female pattern hair loss – can start to occur any time following puberty but it can also be treated using the unisex, clinically-proven medication minoxidil. This is a solution that is applied directly to the scalp once or twice per day, as advised, and can be combined with a number of hair growth boosters to help inhibit further thinning and accelerate regrowth.

Once boys reach 18 years of age they also become eligible to also use finasteride 1mg but this is only for the treatment of male hair loss and is not suitable for girls or women.

If the hair loss is caused by another condition we are able to treat effectively, such as telogen effluvium, which causes temporarily thinning hair all over the scalp and is mostly seen in females, or Alopecia Areata, the autoimmune disorder which can result in patchy hair loss, then as long as the teen is at least 16 years old and medically approved for treatment, providing it should not be a problem.

The best thing to do is to have a professional hair loss specialist nurse carry out an assessment whereby they can diagnose the condition and advise as to the age-appropriate treatment options available. If treatment is a viable option then they will make recommendations for a bespoke, personalised plan to prevent further shedding and help promote regrowth. In the case of any teenagers with hair loss who are under 16 years old, we recommend speaking to your GP.

Hey, Thanks for this information. Before reading this post, I was in doubt that hair loss problem in teenager can't be treated until they turn at least 18 years old, But now the confusion is clear. Now I can get hair loss treatment as I'm 17. Thanks again!

Hi Ron, Thanks! We're glad you found our blog helpful. Yes, you can receive minoxidil-only treatment from 16 years of age so you are within the age range. You would need to be assessed by one of our hair loss specialist nurses first to determine your suitability before we could recommend the best high strength minoxidil formulation to treat your receding hairline, however.
