Question: I just started using hair loss treatments because my hair’s thinning on top. Am I ok to use suncream on my head if I’m using minoxidil?
Answer: Hi Cy. Absolutely. You can use sun cream on your scalp after applying minoxidil as long as you wait 15 to 20 minutes in between. You don’t mention which type of minoxidil you use – liquid, foam or cream – but rest assured, this advice applies to all formulas.
When you’re getting ready to go out, if you apply the minoxidil to dry hair and scalp as usual first, then go about your regular morning routine, by the time you’ve had a cup of coffee and brushed your teeth you should be fine to apply a sunscreen to your scalp.
Whilst we don’t recommend a particular brand, the best formula to look for in sun protection for your scalp is one that is non-greasy and ideally non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog hair follicles). Also make sure you use a sun cream that offers a high level of both UVA and UVB protection – when it comes to the SPF, the higher the better given the top of the head is so exposed to the elements.
